AE 82 + Towbar

can a 5dr sedan or hatch towbar fit a 3dr hatchback?

can my Corolla tow a 920kg boat (16ft W 90hp) a small distance of about 10kms from home to the boat ramp with out major hassel?

we used to tow a 14ft boat with 70hp with our 1300cc 81' corolla.

i'm sure it will tow it "ok", braking might be fun, take it slow and you SHOULD be ok, might be a bit harsh on the clutch if you push it... but if you intend towing it out of the water and up the boat ramp i'd say you'd be lucky to not get stuck, or go swimming in your car :lol: :lol: :lol: :lol:

Piece of cake, I towed the SW20 in a fully enclosed trailer with the wagon about that distance no dramas.
Have also towed an S13 Silvia on an A frame from Titahi Bay to Palmy without too much stress, though it was a long journey.

i towed my 17ft boat with a 120 on the back with my ae82 fxgt about 300kms now and again for holidays,probably should be a braked trailer and i think law would stipulate it now.short distances will be sweet

what effect does my lowered AE82 have on towing? Its got Kingspring super lows on each corner?

I might only be towing the 13.5ft boat mentiond above, which I know can be towed.

Know the weight of what you're towing, and what the Towbar is rated to handle.

A lot of FWD cars, the towbar ends up with a rating which is only fractionally above the unloaded weight of your average homemade garden trailer 8O Though that limit goes up substantially when its braked.

To give you an idea, my Caldy's Towbar is rated 450kg unbraked / 1500kg braked - and I have a rear axel to bolt to :?


Engine power isn't the biggest worry - ultimately unless you have some uber steepness issues and/or your car will be heavily loaded whilst towing, most cars can handle a trailer borne load without hassle - but braking and general control are of concern. If the trailer has more than a certain amount of mass, jack-knifing under braking or cornering is a real risk. (My dad's 3SFE powered ST191 Corona was jack-knifed by a trailer load of dirt... not pleasant!)

As mentioned above, I think the biggest problem will be getting up a boat ramp. FWD + Heavy Trailer + Steep hill = :cry: .

Believe me, my ST171 GTR has trouble getting going uphill with a loaded 6 x 4 trailer due to traction issues.

I've had a scary experience with towing an "unbraked" trailer. Used to tow my old race car with a townace van using an A-frame. This one race meeting i did some suspension damage so had to borrow an unbraked trailer made of 100% steel. Now was that scary trying to stop at intersections... :roll: :?
