Clutch replacement on a 1991 MR2 G Ltd

Postby sigma » Mon Jan 22, 2007 12:23 pm

So my brother is looking to buy the above mentioned car. Took it for a drive yesterday and when I shifted while overtaking someone the clutch slipped something chronic. Its done 160,000 and has never had the clutch done so im guessing its nearly time.

My question is, how much work is it on these cars? Does the engine need to come out, and how much would you expect to pay for a garage to do it?

Flick Mr. Rev an email and he should be able to tell you how much you will have to pay for the parts...a garage should be able to do it in 6 hrs or less, so at 50-60 an hour you're looking at a pretty sizeable bill there mate. From memory it cost me 250 for labour when i got a new clutch kit put in my FX
1988 r31 TI Skyline.
1982 ra60 Celica (my Aussie Toyota and axle stand warrior).
ex: 1991 Corolla, 1989 fxgt-v, 1985 aw11. 1992 sw20 gt-s. 2002 glxi Lancer wagon (work hack)
next car - another a-dub please!

6 hours! They are basically the same as any old FWD clutch to do. Should be done in about 4.

4 hours at $60+/hr for labour would be $270. Add on whatever parts come to ($200+ retail for SW20 through Toyota I think?), little bit for a flywheel machine etc. Should be done for $500 going at retail with full labour price at a rough guess.

You don't want to know how long mine took then. lol

Budget on more than four hours labour for someone to do this.
Engine dosen't have to come out, but you do need to support it somehow while the transmission is off, eg. hang it.

Last time i priced it from toyota.... Although check with them, cos i got tucked for a $41 axle seal which was half that price a few weeks prior.....

Clutch kit. $130
Toyota standard service time for a clutch replacement is 4.4hours

Work it out on an average workshop rate. Expect a bill around $500-$600 on the cheaper side of things.

Thanks guys, I called Toyota here in CHCH and they said '$900-$1000' 8O

If the engine doesn't have to come out im sure we can sort it ourselves. My mates got all the tools/stands/beer etc.

Would it not be just as fast if you did remove the engine? Easier too i'd imagine.

cost me $300 to do from some dodgey Chinese mechanic.

Including taking flywheel out, which I took and machined it at my own cost.

And they bent my strut brace, after I told them "Don't use the struct brace to hang my engine"

Their reply was "What? you got a better idea as to what to hang it from?"

Say yes, use something to support the engine from underneath. So much easier
