Turbo Trims

Postby Boosted_162 » Fri Jan 26, 2007 8:42 pm

Well i'm about to start looking for a new turbo for my GT4. I will be using a T3/T4 on a custom manifold.

The only problem is theres so many different trim's of T3/T4's. I saw in this thread here explaining what different trims mean. But how do you go about working out which trim will best suit your needs?

Maybe someone could make a FAQ with this info, cos i'm sure it would apply to a few people!

There are a lot of things that come into it, www.stealth316.com has a good explanation of how to read compressor maps.

How I usually do it is to pick a compressor wheel that suits my requirements (boost, airflow), then an exhaust side that suits when I want it to spool. Your best bet is to look around at what other people are running on a similar setup for your power target.

Cheers

What's the power goal?
No "stance", no "hellaflush", none of that bullshit. Nothing but no grip on full boost.

Yep good link from mistr2

another one I found useful was http://www.turbobygarrett.com/turbobygarrett/tech_center/tech_center.html which goes over choosing a turbo for your application.

Has info for noobs right up to pretty onto it people, so is good in that respect.

Cheers for the links, i sorta got the idea. Ill keep reading through them.

Im using a T3/T4 mainy cos of it's proven results on good power (just look at Bazda), and cos of it's huge range on different trims. I'm hoping for about 400hp at the flywheel when im finished, with supporting mods (ECU, injectors etc)

The other option i was thinking of was a TD06, but there was more cost in that option, plus less common.

TD05H with a TD06 compressor & housing will give you that. Find an Evo 1-3 turbo take it to motorsport engineering and away you go. For their physical size they flow more CFM than garret based turbos. I'm not a fan of mitsubishi but their turbo's are good.

Well unless that has a T3 flange, i wont be using it now cos my new manifold has a T3 flange.

I noticed last night that some Garrett turbos have a T3 flange, so a GT3040R or GT3540R might be up my alley :D

Yeah, i saw the 35/40 had a rated power of 700hp . It got me thinking just to get new pistons/rods and everything now, and go for a higher power target .

im going for the same power figure as you, im most likly going down the TD06 or TD05/6 route. I have a td05/6 on my subaru and i enjoy the power band it gives on they lagy EJ20

If you have a T3 flange, definitely go a Garrett GT3071R - it will make 400hp and has a bit of headroom at that point, and spools very well for how much power it can make. They look cool too - 4" inlets make turbo look like they want to eat stuff haha. I hear they get on well with 3SGTEs.

Just had a look on the Garrett site, that sized turbo looks like what i'd be after, altho the GT3076 seems to flow a bit more if i end up going for a slightly higher rated turbo.

And i see what you mean by big intake! 8O

In the real world the difference between the GT3071R and the GT3076R is bigger than you'd get the impression on paper, at least from what I have seen. The GT3071R spools quite a bit better than a GT3076R - and the GT3076R makes quite a bit more power.

I am quite fond of the GT3076Rs though 8)
