Engine Oil Coolers...

Postby 2jayzgte » Tue Jan 16, 2007 7:03 pm

Hey guys,

I am doing a FMIC upgrade to my Supra and want to run after market oil cooler as the FMIC is going right in front of the radiator so I figure a engine oil cooler is going to help big time with cooling. My question is that what size oil cooler should I get as I no TRUST and BLITZ do 10 and 16 row kits so Im figuring something along those lines but some feedback would be great. My friend runs a 20 row in his but I've been told not to go to big can someone explain to me why.Any other constructive comments would be great...

Cheers 2jayzgte........ :D

Big ones aren't an issue if you get one of those ones that have a thermostat in them. The oil has to be at operating temperature, and you don't want to over cool it.

What is wrong with "over cooling" oil, it is highly unlikely that you will have -30 outside? I have ran 16row cooler on my Trueno without oil thermostat for about ~100000kms with no problems like sludging or premature wear, as long as the car warms up and thermostat in the cooling system present and functioning the parts will have temperature very close to coolant temp. Infact my 20v stopped typical 20valve burning oil after I installed oil cooler. I would think pistons would benefit from slightly colder oil cooling them (oil squirters) and thus will reduce detonation. Oh yeah the car sometimes sees 9krpm. Also it has 230000kms on the clock. So far I have not seen any side effects in having oil "too cold" (probably never is).

I am just wondering some good reputable brands of oil coolers to look at I know all the JDM brands HKS,Blitz,Trust and what not just wondering if there are some others that are as good closer to home.Another thing I don't mind spending a little bit more money for quality..

I recommend using steel braided hoses. They are much stronger and don't collapse. Also they come with much better connectors. Pushlock fittings are crap.

Sergei,

Cheers for the feed-back I am going with the good fittings and braided hose's.How about brands of coolers any idea's I had a look at a drivetech 16 row today. As for size of cooler I spoke to my friend who mechanics on a V8 tourer he said the bigger the better as long as you get a good flow of air on the cooler bigger is better....

Cheers again 2jayzgte... :D
