1JZ Coolant Leak

Postby Si » Fri Feb 02, 2007 10:45 pm

After going for a drive the other night, saw steam comming from the bonnet...
Stopped and found water leaking :( . Got car back into town etc etc. Had a look and found a split heater hose. replaced heater hose.

Filled car up with water again and started. And the thing still pours water all over the ground!

After a couple of hours digging around the back of the block i find what appears to be the leak. there is a metal pipe that runs from thee water pump, down the drivers side of the block, around the back of the block to half way up the other side! the pipe must have a crack or pin-hole in it. (Cant feel any damage with my fingers)

from a pic when doing my clutch, this is what the pipe is i think

Image

now the ways of fixing it i see are either removing the gbox and cutting the pipe out and joining a replacement bit in. or removing the pipe it self. removing the pipe itself would involve removing of the intake manifold and the turbos etc. of the two options both are a bitch.

Just fixing the leak wouldnt check the rest of the pipe for damage... which could be bad later on.

Anyone had anything else similar happen, or know what causes it?
Or can suggest a alternative way of fixing it?

Theres the pipe, in yellow. its all one bloody piece!

It makes me want to cry. There is very little way that engine is comming out without a hoist (or angle grinder)

im tempted to use radiator leak fixer stuff. but yeah not sure on that

if you use that then next time i'm down them ways i will guarantee that i will slap you silly with what ever is in reach :?

If i was closer, i would mind giving a had to remove the engine. i like to think i have that down to an art :P

Might be better to just get a new part or if too much and no can do, then taking it out and having it welded up will have to be the go-er.

Waas hoping it was something stupid a clamp not being put back on from the engine being removed (just like i did  )

Where in Palmy are you based anyways?

In Palmy around the terrace end of town, similar area to mmmboost.

looks like the engine needs to come out, which is a pain but oh well.

maybe I should bite the bullet and go big single hehehe

not really in a financial position to do so however :(

the pipe is colored a creamy color in the diagram above, it all looks like one peice so i assume it is.

Runs under the turbos around the block and under the intake manifold.

What tricks are there to removing the 1j? turbos on or off?

Okay cool,
now, does the gearbox need to come out, or can the clutch just be unbolted from the flywheel and the gbox left in place while the engine is remobed?

alllll out in one go is the way :)

basically disconnect/unbolt everything from the chassis and remove.

might wanna get a hold of the bgb or (similar) or something like cygnusx1 - http://cygnusx1.net/Supra/Library/TSRM/MK3/for removing engine. its based on the 7m but you get the idea on what needs to be removed and all that :)

this pipe feeds into the sandwhich plate behind the oil filter(oil cooler) then into the block no re-routing to be done

Thats a pain in the ass, who ever made the exhaust didnt put any flanges in. so its one length. and of course the exhaust bolts to the gearbox!

Pain in ass!!!!

so far i have the radiator etc out, intercooler piping out, and now started on the wiring loom.

very very tempted to go to the bank and get 10k and have some fun and games :)

If it's just leaking from a certain spot on the pipe can't you just cut the pipe and put some high temp tube over it and clip it on?
