In a diesel, is it even possible with a normal tacho?

Cheers

There is a Diesil tacho interface available to run a wire out of the alternator into the interface and out to a tacho.

They are only as accurate as you calibrate it to be,
so to be really accurate you need to get them set of a proper diesil tacho ( that runs off pressure pulses in the fuel line)
or an optical tacho.

So
Q. In a diesel, is it even possible with a normal tacho?
A. Yes but expensive and difficult.
