Air Filter flow rating/hp rating?

Postby ~SlideWays~ » Thu Feb 08, 2007 9:58 am

Have searched but nothing...

Never really thought about this but has anybody ever encountered problems with their air filter becoming a restriction on their forced induction engines while tuning etc?

Im just using a re-usable "3A racing" pod type one, no idea if this is going to cause flow problems. My old man just bought a K&N one which is rated at 230hp...how the feck is that calculated? I've had mine flowing enough for 200hp atw but am aiming for about 50% more now.

Anyone looked into this?

That rating is load of crap in my opinion. They should rate filter like fuel pumps: pressure drop at certain flow of air. As in filtering purpose paper filters are the best ones.

not forced induction, but my mrs altezza recently had the filter changed, and it it now a much more lively car.... It has almost 100000kms on it, and still had the factory filter in it... replaced with new genuine article, but it was almost 1kg lighter, so there was a lot of shit in there.

There would have to be some limits on any sort of HP calculation used for filters, as in only valid when purchased or something similar.

I have seen one that did run into a fuel filter limitation on an older car that my dad had, and he ended up putting a y splitter in the fuel line, then two fuel filters then a y join to get it back to the original single line... problem was solved after that... not too sure how he figured out that was the problem though.
