yet another 3s question

Postby MR2SIK » Thu Feb 08, 2007 6:21 pm

Hey guys, just wanting to pick your minds again.
Im asking this cos the reply I got from my mechanic wasnt too positive.
Roughly how long would it take to remove an engine from a sw-20 and replace it with a new one? replacment engine is complete minus turboo flywheel and intake piping?
asking about how long it would take for an average mechanic whos only real experience with mr2s have been mine for the last 4 years.

It oughtnt take that long, they're not that complicated to remove. Maybe ring around a few mechanics to get an idea.

Looking at it, its probly easiest to just drop the sub frame and go from there, not any harder than a FWD car. Out of interest how many hours labour have you been quoted?

agreed...even an 'average' mechanic wouldnt be that long. a beginner with the tools, going slow perhaps...
guess it also depends if straight swap, or if fitting new water pump, cam belt, cleaning engine etc which would be a good idea at the same time
Cant believe im still a member here.

yea thats all been done 8)

was just a straight swap of my gen2 3sgte with a straight swap of my new gen3 engine, they didnt even have to worry about ecu or the miniscule differences with the intake piping.

I didnt mention to them that it was a different generation engine either, the quote was for swapping a gen2 engine with another gen2 engine

20 hours is ridiculous! One of our customers had the motor and box out of a supercharged AW in 2 hours, and hes an old coot and hasnt done much with MR2's.

Find a new mechanic!

When I got the engine rebuilt in my car I dropped it off and came back about 2 hours later and he had the motorout and stripped down to the bare block.
Once he had got everything cleaned up and the block and head back from the guys that plained and honed everything it took him something like 16-20 hours to rebuild the motor and get it back in the car.....

You sure they not going to rebuild the whole thing then put it in the car???
If you came down to Chch Sean I'm sure I could point you in the direction of my mate who did my engine rebuild, he would be able to sort you on a Saturday or something???

I don't blame them, my engine has been sitting on my driveway for 6 months, and I don't wanna touch it.
No "stance", no "hellaflush", none of that bullshit. Nothing but no grip on full boost.

As much fun as its been taking a standard car and watching it drop from 14's to 12's and hopefully soon even lower down the 1/4 mile, my next car is either going to be a cruiser or one thats already been built

I am not mechanicly minded whatsoever, sopmething I can just get in and drive is my next goal.

Although that will probably change again once the mr2 is running

Mine cost $2500 all up including removing the broken gearbox and putting the new one in, Brand new clutch, fuel filter, installing the new suspention, probably forgot some other things.
Oh and then going back at a later stage to make sure everything is torqued up properly and a oil and filter change....
