A Small Problem With My Corolla?

My Corolla has had this problem for a while, that is, when your in 5th, accelerating and de-accelerating, the stick moves quite a bit. Only in 5th gear.

Now just recently, the play in the stick has moved so much, that when i accelerate in 5th, and depress the pedal really quick, it pops right out of 5th gear.

Would just like to know, how major is this problem?, and about how much will it cost to fix?

my dads hilux has this in first... problem is some springs of some sort according to the mechanic(he worded it better, but I seldom listen)... nothing to worry about so he said, although I'm not a mechanic, and I always thought he was a dodgy bugger. The hilux takes off fine in second, so no biggy if it loses first anyway.

Its a common problem With the 'C' series fwd boxes.
My GF's AE92 GT pops back and forth in 5th

Could also be engine mounts, but as said could just be you gearbox weraing out.

Common problem, cheapest option is to replace with a pick-a-part one that is ok.

cost $77, $69 if you take the old one back.
and a day with a socket set.

It should only do it when there is relatively little pressure on it, otherwise the pressure applied by the engine should hold it in gear. which from reading what you wrote is the opposite to what it is doing... I bow out at this point and leave it to more knowledgeable people.

things to do:

1. Check your engine/gearbox mounts for a broken one. particularly front and rear ones (rear one is a bugger to get to to look at but its worth the time/effort)

2. Check your gear shift linkages for slop (under the gear shift boot and the bushes on the gearbox)

3. Take it to a Transmission place and ask them to look at it for you. Could be (god.. not interlocks but the other ball bearing things in gearboxes that help hold the selector shafts/forks in place....the name escapes me) This is usually a relatively easy task. they just unbolt a small plate on the side of gearbox (unsure of location on a "C" series) and 3 round (duh lol) ball bearings and springs should pop out.

On a C5* series...only way is to strip it down to get those bearings...

While your car is not a AW11 here is something you might find interesting...

The 85-86 Mr2 had the C-50 transmission while the 87+ NA models had the C-52, which was an upgraded and strengthened version of the C-50. This included stronger input and output shafts with larger diameter bearings on some of the gears, along with updated syncros. The C-50s are notorious for having what's been described as the 5th gear popout. This is where 5th gear will pop out engagement when the throttle is applied. Some C-52s also have this problem. The trannys will also sometimes have bad 2nd or 3rd gear syncros. While one might think that these trannys are not that great because of all these problems, this is not entirely true. If treated correctly, with a somewhat periodic changing of the tranny oil, a C-50 or C-52 can handle great amounts of power and last a long time. If you have the 5th gear pop out problem, first check your tranny and engine mounts to see if they are worn out and causing too much engine movement. After that, some have been able to stop the problem by replacing the 5th gear and synchro, others have not.

ahh right, ahh well, thanks for all the info, looks like cant do too much anymore, although i would like to keep the car in, "good condition" thanks all.
