which would suggest it breaks on the way up.
of course is could just get fired upwards after it breaks, but its not likely to break on the way down is it.
From what i believe with rod failures in general is that at high RPM it is when you lift off that they fail,
The piston is coming up the bore at an amazing speed,
and when the throttle closes there is hardly any air in the cylinder and so the lack of actual pressure on top of the piston to slow it down aid's in the rod failure, hence they break on TDC and the piston caries on upwards.
Depending on where they break then depend on the damage.
We had a 1GGZE throw a rod at an endurance race.
They driver hooked 2nd at the hairpin a bit to early and over revved it.
the rod broke right at the top by the gudeon.
Because the remaining rod length was so long it could not drop down below the bottom of the bore so just slid up and down in the block.
the only symptoms the car showed was it missed on one cylinder.
After checking spark, plugs, injector etc etc was not until we stripped the motor we found it.
How ever if the rod can drop down below the bottom of the bore it will move out to the side at BDC and then when it comes back up again it will punch holes in things,
as Mr Revhead may remember with the same 1GGZE having 3 places in the block where you could see in one side and out the other.
