Removing 3sgte from ST185 GT-4

Postby ALLTREC_TURB » Wed Feb 14, 2007 3:22 pm

I have a gt4 which has blown a head gasket, so I have removed the head etc to find that the bores are rather rusted from it sitting for a long time, so I'm not proceeding to remove the motor for a big clean up (hone new bearings and water pump etc.
I have removed the engine mounts, all nessicary wiring power steer and aircon pumps etc etc, and most bell housing bolts but there is one I can't get to, its at the bottom left hand side of the block, it's too worn to use a ring spanner on and very difficult to get a socket in there. Was just wondering if anyone can give me any tips of how i can get it out without dropping the crossmember etc out, which is what im really trying to avoid.
Any help would be much appriciated, can possibly get a photo up if that would make it easier

Cheers

you really really really really want to remove the gearbox with the engine. You might not thing you want to, but I can guarantee you that you want to. It's not that much extra work compared to what you're getting up against (trust me, there's not just only bolt left to undo, if you haven't removed the crossmembers yet then you have no idea how much work lies ahead of he who wishes to remove engine without removing gearbox)

Ohk then, easier to drop motor out the bottom or lift it out? I can get the car up high enough to drop it if you think that would be best, hmm i knew i'd regret working on 4WDs haha, ahh well a bit more experince i suppose.

Sounds like tomorrows mission then, also does anyone have pics of front mount setups for gt4s as to where the cooler has been mounted and pics of piping etc.

My old GT4!. Ive got so many parts off that car on my current one, wheels, suspension, motor etc

I dropped my motor out with no previous experience, i pulled the shafts out of the hubs, then undid the crossmembers (i left north-south one attached to mounts)then undid the mounts. Dropped the whole car to the ground then lifted the car over the motor. Didnt really take that long either.

Its nearly all done, all linkages and stuff gone, just drive shaft and axels left, im not sure whether to take shafts out of the gearbox or off the hubs? If so do they just pull out so to speak or do i have to unbolt all those allen key bolts, shown below...

Also the struts in my car are damper adjustable is this standard for GT-4s, and can anyone tell me if these springs are standard or not...

don't undo the allen key bolts, get someone to pull on the shaft and gently pry it out of the gearbox, lots of oil will come out if you haven't drained the transfer case
