Hey I have ST165 with CT20b on it, the ST165 had done over 200000kms, and I tell you CT20b did get me from 15.0 to 13.5 quarter mile ;). With CT20b and 16.5psi I get ~180kw at the wheels. The only problem I have with CT20b is when I put 3" exhaust system it started overboost all the time.
So if you have stock exhaust system (or atleas 2.5" piping) you should be fine.
For me it did a big difference, no loss of power after 5500rpm for sure...
I think for 300Hp or near at the flywheel CT20b is the best turbo.
Generally 300Hp should be plenty for road car, while keeping it drivable, of course you could put all those fancy turbos (to get 400+Hp) but the problem with them that the power curve will be very peaky and car will be very sluggish to drive.

One would gather you never found a solution to the overboosting.
The answer is Helmholtz!

I was under the impression that gen2 st185s run 8spi standard from the ct26? so therefore isnt 15psi gonna A) initiate the fuel cut in the ECU, and B) over work/completely destroy my mains and big ends?

I know the JZ engines are almost bulletproof, just havent heard of the 3S being near half as able to take high boost.

Has anyone done a turbo upgrade on a Gen2 3SGTE? (ST185 GT4)

reason i ask is im wanting to know what sort of boost i can run without blowing the engine to bits.

Was thinking of running the CT26 un gated but ive heard they like to spit their parts out your exhaust if you do this to them.

Can anyone confirm this?

Also, If anyone has done a turbo upgrade, what did you use and how much did it cost? i wanna stay away from using new headers etc. so one that bolts to the factory flange would be good. Am not too worried about gettin a custom down pipe as theyre not very expensive.

we (Alltech) have done so many upgrades this year on the CT26's
i think we are on to our 6th one now...

pretty simple..
1 x 46trim T04E Compressor wheel (new of course)
1 x Steel turbine wheel & shaft assembly (new of course)
machine Compressor wheel, bearing housing & Compressor cover to suit.
rebuild (Bearings, Piston rings, Orings, etc...)
all up including labour & machining and GST $1,480..

gets rid of the lack of power above 5,500rpm
and bolts back on in place... no mods need to fit...

with any upgrade you dont need to run lots of boost,
say on the above upgrade 12psi will well out do 15 on the stock unit...
(if you start to run over 15psi on the stock turbo you start to go backwards, creating more heat in the air, making the intake temp hotter,
meaning less hp..)

running the turbo "un gated" ... not a good idea
you must have some sort of wastegate if it is the internal or an external gate. or you will over boost. can you say 25+psi of boost on a stock engine, recipe for disater your stock injectors/pump wont cope, & will lean out the fuel if your not lucky good by engine...

as i said when i get to work i'll post a price for the upgrade & some pictures..

Cheers
Chris

LOL, let me know where you can rebuild your bottom end for 1480?
i've been quoted for around 2500 just labour for the rebuild of the bottom end for my ST205
97 Toyota GT4 ST205 1st run 16.2psi 181.2KW
more to come...

as replied to earler

Hmm, if your price isnt too bad, i think it could be a good option, as my engine has done high kms.. and is due for a cambelt in the next 10 thou.

Then again, gettin my engine to auckland and then back might not be so easy.

phothog wrote:Ah.. mmm we dont need the engine. just the turbo... if you do anything with us.. uummm dont send the engine.

maybe i should clear it up ...

$1480 inc GST is for a Rebuild & upgrade on a CT26 turbo.
for
1 x T04E 46Trim Compressor Wheel, 2 x Bearings
2 x Piston rings, 2 x Orings 1 x Turbine wheel & shaft assembly,
1 x Shaft nut + Machinng, Labour, Balance, including a spin on New Zealands only True VSR (Vibration Sorting Rig) balancer.

i have a picture here of one we have just done.
