turbo 4agte where to start

Postby XXL » Mon Feb 12, 2007 7:30 pm

hey guys hows it going? i have a few questions about setting up my big port red top with a tubro. i am pretty new to the whole dohc turbo set up i have had all old pushrod motors and so iam kind of ignorant on where to start. i have read a few of the posts about 4agtes but still a bit confused on it all

i do not have the money to do an azge transplant and stripping my block and doing forged internals is out if my budget to, but on the bright side i have a new turbo mainfold and a really tidy T3 for it.

i guess I want to know what problems i will have if i try to set it up with stock internal running only 6psi boost. also whats an easy way to lower my comp down. also what needs to be done with the ecu

am i just wasting my time. i would like to be able to drive it for a while with out putting a rod out the side of the block

anyway any advice is helpful

cheers XXL

have a search for 4agte and 4age turbo etc, many people have done it with different methods so with a bit of a search you'll get a good idea of whats ahead of you :)

I'll be getting pretty much the same thing going as you very shortly. I've got a stock bigport Redtop, which is going to be turboed. I'm still running stock ECU and base engine, but doing a few other mods to get it running. Give me a PM and I'll let you know what I've done and give it another maybe month and I'll let you know how it all goes.

some things to think about... and going on other people's experiences + logic here... (im *yet* to build 4agte)
putting a turbo on a std 4age, stock efi system is asking for trouble as the ignition and fueling is tuned for n/a and compression too high for reasonable boost. ring lands are usually the first thing to break! running 6psi on stock internals should handle it fine. you can safely run more psi if the efi is tuned to suit. adviseable to use 4agze pistons as are much stronger.
some things to watch out for is putting a turbo on a high km engine.. as the turbo is sucking some of the oil and high k's means worn bearings and low oil pressure, so big end bearing failure is not uncommon. especially on bluetop.

Most of that is pretty true.
I dont think the amount of oil that a turbo uses will have an effect on the oil pressure to the bearings.
Run bearings are more likely caused by detonation than oil problems unless you get oil surge.

A standard 4AGE will take a turbo no problems with low to meduim boost levels.
6 8 or maybe 10 may even last, but as said above the Timing and Fueling
are the thing that makes it last or go bang.
