Im hearing funny noises

Postby AJz » Mon Feb 26, 2007 8:30 pm

Having small issues with the Caldina atm, want to see if you guys can give me some ideas as to whats causing it, hopefully both are related.

Note: have just had a different gearbox put in by toyota as was covered under warranty.

Firstly when driving you will get this whining noise, it comes and goes. Its not the gearbox whine you sometimes get in 4wds, more deeper. I can feel it through the go pedal and also the floor.

secondly upon going round a right hand corner and booting it you get quite a loud clicking noise from the back, its a very messy sound, almost like its jumping teeth.

I have a few ideas and have checked under the car for anything loose or not properly tightened but im curious to other peoples ideas/suggestions.

Left rear wheel bearing? Quite a common problem on Caldinas.

Both symptoms point to it, but it could also be the CV joint.

I'm not sure if you could easily tell, other than replacing it and see if the noise disappears. FWIW I had a mechanic diagnose mine as a worn out shock absorber, which I knew it wasn't. So if they can't tell, how is a backyard mechanic supposed to :?

Santasboostinsleigh had a similar issue with an odd noise coming from his GT-T...I believe it ended up being something like the exhaust hitting the driveshaft? Worth checking just in case

Correct, his exhaust had very very minimal clearance with the drive shaft, under load the exhaust would flex, hit the drive shaft then bounce & hit the floor pan, would repeat this a few times over.

fixed within 10 or 15 minutes easily though

yea after taking it out with my flatmate 2nite to do some brief "experiments" to nail down what was causing the knocking, im pretty sure its the exhaust hitting the driveshaft, you can see a little mark where it keeps hitting. Thats not hard to fix. Thanks.

Sorry to bring this topic back - I was about to post a new thread with that same sentence.

I have the exact same issue with my GTT - the sound comes and goes after the car has been sitting for a while or when its cold.
I feel it through the accelerator, but not so much the floor.
Its been through two warrants, a mechanical check & a wheel alignment with nobody picking up a fudged bearing - I was told by the mechanical check guy it was probably a tyre. Its been doing it for the last 12,000kms without getting worse up until two days ago - now its getting a little worse.

-It sounds to me like its coming from the FR wheel, but I know sounds in cars can do funky things.

I'm going on a long trip soon (approx 4,000kms - 5,000kms) so I need to sort this now. AJ did you find what was causing it?

nope, mine still does it. have taken it to toyota a couple of times and they cant hear it. it comes and goes, sometimes pulses. It sort of whines is the way to describe it. I was going to try and get a 2nd hand to swap out just to see if that was the prob, but of course theres a chance the other hub could b the same. mines front left.

most common in ST215's is left rear i think.

Interesting. What you've described sounds exactly like what I have.

I checked the front bearings last night - both the FL & FR wheels feel tight (no play), and they spin nicely. I didn't check the back though - I'll take a look at those soon.

I figured if it was a bearing it should have completely gone by now (surely 12,000kms would have caused the bearing to seize by now).

Count me in as well..
BZG yours sounds similar to mine, getting a light clicking sound coming from FR wheel, happens on coasting intermittently, braking with the enigne in high revs still, left hand corners when not accelerating too hard, right hand corners all is sweet. The sound is similar to a CV noise with same sorta frequency maybe slightly softer though. No vibration felt at all.
Felt pretty sure it was the CV (even though was doing it in a straight line) and had the outer, replaced on monday after mechanic agreed thats what it sounded like, (noise remained, wallet now lighter  ) then spent the rest of the afternoon trying to figure out what the hell it is! :?
Mechanic suggested maybe the inner race of bearing, i'm sceptical as doesn't do it routinely enough for something taking load all the time, and doesn't do it when fanging hard through a left hand corner.
Tried running the car up on the hoist all is quiet,
Thinking rather unhappily maybe the front diff????

Any suggestions would be appreciated, really do want it sorted

Caldina bearing failure doesn't seem to be picked up by the regular tests. However upon replacement the noise usually disappears :?

along those lines, same goes for a rumble in the gearbox of the runx, replacing the factory clutch and flywheel makes it go away... even the trd one makes it go.

If replaced with stock item, it comes back.
