Oil coolers

Postby AE82 FXGT » Sat Mar 03, 2007 1:00 pm

Hey all,
I'm looking at getting an oil cooler for my car soon.

Seeing as 4ages have the oil filter under the exhaust manifold, I was wondering if the sandwich plate that the cooler uses will create any clearance issues for the filter?

I don't really want a remote mount filter unless I really have to.

Also will the car still be good on 3.8 litres (or whatever 4ages take) of oil, or do I have to increase the amount as I'm increasing to the amount volume that the oil has to cover?

I've read a couple of pages on oil coolers and it seems the some people have issues with pressure on start up as the cooler has to pressurise, is there a way around this? (aside from using an inhibitor switch running of the oil pressure lamp)

Thanks

I think you can get a one way valve for it so the oil stays in the line and doesn't drain back in to the sump to help with cold starting.

I would assume you would add extra oil to compansate for the extra volime.

Clearance for the filter may or may not be an issue it would totally depend on your exhuast setup & the filter you run. I've seen clearance issues using a stock filter with some exhaust setups.

You will need to increase the amount of oil you are using I'd say probably another litre or two. It'll basically be whatever the volume of the cooler/lines is.

Anyone that is having oil pressure issues on strtup has obviously got something wrong somewhere. It could be the cooler is mounted wrong, filter is mounted wrong, no anti-drainback valve in the filter etc. There should basically be no differenece between a stock setup & one with a cooler.

It's a stock exhaust manifold and I'm using a Toyota oil filter, does anyone know if I can get a shorter aftermaket oil filter?

I'm looking at one of those cooler kits from drivenperformance, it doesn't look like it comes with a one way valve or anything. Anyone know where I can get one and how much I should be looking at?

I didn't know that.
I'll look into it on Monday when the local toyota dealer is open
Though I'mn not having clearance issues yet, just wondering if I'm gona run into them.

quite a few diameters and lengths available for 4ages in various filter brands if that ends up being an issue.
Cant believe im still a member here.

Yeah went and had a look, and it looks like I could get a way wiht an extra few cm, just hope that the sandwich plate isn't that big.

So I pretty much add whatever volume the cooler and lines is on top of whatever my current oil capacity is.

Does anyone have any info on that one way valve?
I googled it but couldn't find that much.
Any help would be appreciated

Thanks for the help so far.

On my car I check the oil a few about 1 min after I have stopped it and run oil at the normal level.
That way the cooler and lines are still full of oil and doesn't affect the level.
You will need a bit extra the first time you fill it.

Interestingly my oil level doesn't actuall change much if I check it straight after stopping it, or after it has been sitting for a few weeks,
so makes me believe the one way valve in the filter stops it from draining back to sump.

Is this how it would be set up?

from oil pump > sandwich plate > oil filter > sandwhich plate > oil cooler > sandwich plate > reuturn to block

if so, I figured that the oil filter would hold oil but when turned off the cooler would empty a bit then would have to repressurise on start up.

I guess it would depend on how the cooler was mounted and which way the lines point.
