What is Paraparaumu Airport Sprints & Show 'n' Shine?
Paraparaumu Airport Sprint & Show 'n' Shine, formally known as air2there Sprints & Show 'n' Shine, is a community event run by Kapiti Coast District Council, aimed at young car enthusiasts. It aims to educate and influence some of the illegal behavior on Wellington streets which this group has been blamed for by the New Zealand media. Run as part of the councils road safety initiative, working with Police, LTNZ, VTNZ, and other groups and people who volunteer their time in an aim to make this event as successful as possible.
Background
When the “boy racer” legislation was introduced in May of 2003, there was a lot of confusion amongst the young car enthusiasts. Kapiti Coast District Council and the Police decided to hold an information evening where the public could ask questions, and get clarification on what the new law entailed.
It was decided at this meeting that there should be an information day, this was held at Paraparaumu Airport on 14 June 2003, we held a Show and Shine event, with prizes supplied by Mag & Turbo and Repco. This event was very popular and we received nothing but positive feedback.
In 2004, 2005 & 2006 the council decided that it would hold similar events, named air2there Sprints & Show 'n' Shine. This time part of the runway would be used for a 1/8 mile sprint. This was to provide a controlled arena for the public to see how fast their cars were. Once again these events were very successful, and again it was a great arena to educate the young and the old on road safety.
Paraparaumu Airport Sprint & Show 'n' Shine 2007
With the roll over of another year, we will once again run Paraparaumu Airport Sprint and Show & Shine in 2007. This year we will be running a similar event to that held in 2004, 2005 & 2006, but we would love to make it even more popular with more people attending, and make it an even better day out.
