4age ae82 radiator problem

Postby soven » Sat Mar 10, 2007 5:34 pm

I am half way swapping my radiator because the old one has a slight leak but I have ran into a problem.

The new radiator i bought is slighlt different at the top. The inlet is further to the right compared to the old one. Old one has two "holes", one on each side of the top inlet while the new one has two "holes" to the left of the radiator...

Are there different ae82 radiators? The inlet size seems to be very slightly smaller on the new one too. Any suggestions on which to do? try and find another radiator or find a new hose...

I think it'll be easier to find a new radiator than a new hose.

Did you find out how much it would have cost to get your leaky one repaired?
I've found that most radiator places have reasonable prices, usually a lot better than buying another radiator.

its not only leaky but the old rad was in a very bad condition. 1/3 fins missing etc etc. This new one I got is in really good condition.

Just had a thought... maybe I got myself a 4ac radiator?

yeah you can split the core (bit with the fins) & the 2 tanks (steel bits were the hoses go in) off & aslong as there about the same size just join them back together like you want

I did that with pliers on my ae92 one to clean out the top of the core, I wouldn't recommend doing it that way though, they usualy have problems sealing again unless you get it done properly.

ok . yeah, they are exactly the same size etc except for the top hose inlet position. and inlet size.

Trying google but it is too vague to search on the topic. Resealing.. what is the proper procedure?

I found it was just the tabs, you should really use new ones, not just bend the old ones back like I did, it should have a proper rubber seal and shouldn't need sealer as such.

Hi, I work for a radiator place in Christchurch..

They are called PTR tabs (Plastic tab radiators) you bend them back with an uncrimping tool, if you bend them too far, you'll stuff them or they'll snap.

There's an o-ring that sits between the header of the core and the tank, if you dont seat it properly or you rangi it up or you "RTV" it, baby jesus will smite you down.

Radiators arent something you can typically do at home, take it to a proper radiator shop and get them to swap the tanks over for you, They will have a tank listing/complete radiator listing from their favourite wholesale provider.

While you're there, Get the core rodded out.

Normally the cores are put into a jig with Hydraulic rams that push down on the tank + oring to put pressure on them, then you clamp the tabs over again, it's not a simple job doing it at home..

If you get stuck and need a good shop to take it to, I can recommend one of my customers in your area.

Thanks,
Scott @ A1 Radiators CHCH
