I would recommend Castrol GTX Protec. It's a honest oil. What I mean is.. it ain't flashy, it ain't expensive and it has yet to ever fail me. Car is running sweet at 300,000KM fair as my records tell me... never run on anything else since 130000KM. Think it's a 15W-40 from memory.

*edit*

just thought I'd mention that I am running a 3s-f which ok is without the turbo and old as buggery but still gets (and takes extremely well) a good hammering.

I'd probably use a 10W40 semi synthetic in your situation

Not too thin, not too thick so not likely to consume oil and also wont effect your fuel economy

Toyota prob recommend 5W30 but this was when the car was new. Your likely to burn this just cos its so thin

completely agree. Valvoline Syngard is very good.

Can't say I'd agree with that. I use 0w40 or 10w30 Mobil 1 in all my 3S-GTEs, none of them burn any oil and they range from 30-140,000kms.

I guess it comes down to the condition of your engine and how you drive it.

I think that spending $70-80 on oil only to change it every 3000-5000kms a wee bit excessive though

Oil is a personal preference type thing anyway

have to agree on that part, i think i'll just go on the safe side and go 10w-40 and save some money.

Running castrol gtx magnatec here. Think it's 10w40? Have run it in nearly all my cars with no issues.

in modern turbo engine, i think it comes down to how much do you want to spend to prolong the life of your turbo. I dont think the actually engines oilling needs are as picky at the turbo'd needs.

Stick to fully synthetics like 5w-50 mobil 1 and similar and your turbo will love you for it.

I ran my 3SGTE on protec, i used to use magnatec and then a 10w-40 semi synthetic, but i found it too thin (seems to manage to leak everywhere, bit of a rattle on startup etc). It had done 160k, and had a bit of a hard life

I would recomend Total quartz 9000 0w-30 or 0w40 which is a fully synthetic and a lot cheaper generally that Mobil1 (about $50 for 5l )

2 things I wouldn't skimp on are oil and tyres

Why would you change a good quality synthetic oil at such a low interval, dino oil maybe, but not synthetic.

BTW I don't pay anywhere near $70-80 for Mobil 1, more like $50-60.

no they are a different oil. yea and youll find valvoline at most auto stores, the problem with castrol is that because they give huge discounts to the wharehouse buying in bulk the smaller companys just cant compete with their prices and dont bother stocking it.
