Yea I think if you hit the limited you would actually loose speed as you're killing all your forward momentum, similar to engine braking. If you shift just before you carry some of that momentum. Ive seen people drag racing and shifting after the limiter, basically it looks like the car brakes half track, then launches again after they grab the next gear and dump the clutch.

Nah i was meaning you've already passed peak torque and your better off grabbing the next gear.

Like i got faster times down the 1/4 shifting at about 6700rpm rather than close to the 7500rpm redline my car had, thats almost 1,000rpm off the redline yet my car was over 0.2 seconds faster consistantly.


Just because your car can rev to 8,000rpm or what ever doesnt mean its quicker if you shift just before 8krpm

But yes rev limiter $&#$% you up :lol: Ive done that a fair few times :oops: :lol:

My auto has a tacho on it - I look at it quite regularly. Then again, I used the tach in all of my manual cars which had it (and really didnt like the cars that didnt have one).

Yes you can drive by ear, but its not as useful for situations like...

- Youre watching the rev count when having engine problems.
- Youre engine braking and not exactly sure if youve changed too early :o

Its also nice to know that when my trans is set to 'PWR', exactly what RPM level its gear changing at - as compared to normal, for example - and use this to ensure you're actually driving efficiently...

I think all cars should have em, personally...

Same, no real need for aftermarket ones unless there isn't one there from factory (like my Mum's old 1980 Toyota Corona, which probably isn't even a crushed cube anymore) but i'm not meaning a huge 27 inch tacho with christmas lights on it though.

Another one for the shift light, was VERY handy on my 4agte trueno on the track. Stupid screamer pipe meant I couldn't hear the engine, and concentrating on the track meant i would have hit the limiter so many times if it wasnt for the shift light.

Same with my mr2, because the factory tacho was wayyyy out, and it was handy when I was still getting used to it's noise's on the track.

(factory tach said the rev cut was over 9500..... on a blacktop....)

but in saying that, monster tachs are pointless as all hell.

And in general so are shift lights on the street.
