turning ae92 fxgt into Grasskahna machine

Postby deaf_rattle » Sun Mar 18, 2007 6:37 pm

With the nearing completion of the supra im thinking about making the fxgt my toy car.

I really want to get into grass/moto kahnas.

What needs to be done to make the car competitive.

It currently has a 20v conversion and aftermarket suspension
king springs and kyb shocks ( i think makes the car handle like a go kart)

would a roll cage be worth while for these sorts of events?

Keeping in mind that i want to keep the car road legal as it will probably remain on daily driving duties.

I will probably look at getting a new gear box, this one is more suited to top end.

Im guessing an lsd would be a worth while investment for this, or will an open diff be ok on grass?

Will get a rear strut brace made up and probably remove the rear seat and interior to lighten it up.

at the end of the day i dont want to spend huge amounts of money on it, but at the same time i want it to be set up reasonably well for this sort of treatment.

cheers

Lighten it to the days.
LSD.
A gearbox that can has a strong first and second. (So pretty much any factory box will probably do for now!)
Cage is a good optional... but I would say not initially necessary.

Grass vs tarmac is different. Tarmac will probably blow apart CVs... So something a lot stronger in that department will be quickly on the cards. Grass... I'm not sure... I suspect it's quite hard on the diff...

Do nothing but get some 13" rims and some real nice knobbly retreads. snow tyres (without the spikes) are good also.

then attend as many grass events as your back pocket allows to get good at driving on grass.

heck i've seen guys in stock automatic eb civics destroy properly built race cars on grass, so you dont need next to spend next to f**k all to be competitive.

be careful as to the pattern on the tyres though. as long as the outside tread blocks arn't staggered, and the blocks arn't too far apart (8/10mm?) else they will be considered a rally tyre and usually thrown out at scrutineering.

therein lies the secret to a competitive grass car. cams, carbs and compression only create wheelspin and slow times. the fastest cars i have seen have been : Minis, Swifts and Civics, all relatively standard, with soft , long suspension.
I've been a bad bad boy. I should read the rules and behave before I get spanked by an admin

In my experience lots of power is bad on grass, as is an LSD unless the ground is really hard under the grass. (different with 4WD)

get good suitable tyres, maybe a heavier rear sway bar... then practice 8)
