Fitting a Steering Rack Boot...

Revhead and Mmm, boost will probably find this amusing ;)


My ST195 requires a rack boot replaced in order to pass WOF.
For budgetary reasons I'd like to see if I can do this at home, instead of paying to have it done. Catch is, i've not done it before...

... anyone with experience feel like giving us a hand? ;)
In Upper Hutt. I have a decent Carport and most of the tools I would think we'll need - just lacking in the experience department...

Want to see if I can get it done before end of week as the WOF has expired and I wanna take it back on Friday...

I'm in Trentham. The plan is Pizza for dinner, and whoever comes gets to share... proposing maybe Tuesday or Wednesday after work...

Make sure you count the amount of wind's you take to undo the tie rod, then you just count the reverse when you do it back up and if your lucky you *may* get away without a wheel alignment, but would still be a good idea to get one anyway.

I would help but trentham is just a BIT to far away.(plus I'd rather stay as far away from the place as possible)

yep as above.

you will need:
1/2 inch socket set
large hammer (not a claw but a club)
a spanner set, probablt a 19mm and a 17.
pliers
side cutters.

ill know on monday if i can help, have a few things on this week.

Actually Its Joint that I wish to avoid :P,

All the stuff on rev-heads list is important, when you get your boot from repco, get them to have a look at the tie rod and get another split pin that
is exactly the same (trust me you will not be able to re-use your split pin, hence the pliers and side cutters)

a good tie rod end puller is a good idea, these are about 50 bucks for a powerbuilt one, and are worth it considering the 35 dollar fork type alternative will result in splitting the tie rod ball joint boot and you will have to shell out 50 bucks for a new tie rod. (do the math)

the fork type ones are the ones you want to avoid, but the pullers half way down the page are tops. I'm going to go buy one this avo, I would lend it to you but I'm not coming your way.

u can reuse the split pin
the sidecutters are for the zip ties on the boot :wink:

dont need the special tool. thats what the hammer is for.
however DONT smack the top of the tierod. u smack the side of the hub where it goes in.

A split pin is like 50 cents, its a good idea to replace it just cos, I suppose you can just use the hammer, but it saves a lot of four letter words if you have the toll

I have all of the aforementioned tools cept my hammers are conventional claw type - I have a ballpean hammer but its not especially large...

Thats something I should pick up, actually.. never really had a big need for a leadlight before now, as never had any space to do any of my own maintenance beyond oil changes... (only moved into this place in January)

Just picked up a 19mm 1/2" socket from Repco. A Crescent was far too expensive.

Also grabbed a cheap ($6!) lead light from the Red shed but didnt get the right bulbs for it, sigh!! will rectify tomorrow on the way home...
