random oil leak after oil change... caldina gtt

hey guys... need little help here...
i just did an oil and fiter change myself today for my caldina gtt

after that it had some leak on it... it seem to leak to the plastic cover under. the location is between the sump and the filter... i check the sump plug, it is dry, check the filter as well, dry...

the car had only travel 57000km... before the oil change everything was good and tight... and now this...

can anyone shed some light pls....

could it be engine oil problem? i am using castrol edge sport 5w - 30... fully synthetic.

the new oil filter that i had use was the original toyota filter. unlike the one that i pull out which was FRAM...

any help is really appreciated...

besides the oil filter and the sump plug was there anything else you removed?

obvious things to check:

you didnt spill oil all over the engine when refilling
sump plug is done up tight enough and isnt cross threaded
you used the right part number oil filter (4AGE/3SGTE are the same)
the oil filter is done up tight and isnt cross threaded

and as brick said, did you fiddle with anything else?

hmmm... cross threaded... dont think i am strong enough to cross threaded... i havent removed anything else... apart from the filter and sump plug

the last time i check it the sump was dry and the filter too... the plastic cover near the filter and sump was a little wet...

the oil filter i use this is the part number 90915 - 10004 this is compatible with all 3sgte apart from st165?

my old st185 use this as well... caldina had a different one?

unless you angle the car in a way that the oil will drain out of the filter your almost guranteed to spill oil out of the filter,

Did you put a small film of fresh oil on the filter rubber seal when you put it on?

Once the filter rubber seal made contact with the engine block you should of turned it no further than another 3/4 revolution.

Also make sure that the seal off the old filter isn't still stuc to the block as you will get a leak from between the old seal and the new one.

yes you need to clean both surfaces.

im not sure about 3s's but i know 4ages use a sump crush washer between the sump plug and sump.

its made of a cardboard i think and you are uspposed to replace it with each oil change, as they get $&#$% after being crushed.

repco and stuff dont sell em, so youll need to go to toyota

I usually remove the plastic cover - it's only abotut 10 small screws, and makes the job so much cleaner and easier. Just make special note of the couple of screws that tap into metal and not plastic.

Definitely check this cover for oil, as it has grooves in it which oil will sit in.

i did replace the washer as well between the sump and the plug...

i check this morning it seems to be fine now... maybe it is like what snwtoy said... the oil sits in it.. should have remove the plastic cover

When you take an oil filter off, its' damn near impossible to not spill used oil from the filter down the side of the block, unless you're a ninja and can spin the filter off the thread in less than a second! I always degrease the engine after an oil change anyway, I can't stand the smell of burning oil, or oil all over the bottom engine bay cover.
