AW11, or AE86?

Postby RomanV » Sun Mar 25, 2007 7:15 pm

Which do you think would be quicker around a track? In standard form, or with the equivilent mild mods?

Seeing as how they are about the same weight, same engine, etc.. Just different drivetrain layout.

Does the AE86 deserve its reputation, or is the AW11 the unsung hero of the 80s?

It seems crazy when that you can buy an AW11 for SFA, and AE86s (and AE85s) command such a premium. Is this more to do with the fact that they're so rare, or because they're excellent cars to drive?

I havent had much experience driving either of them (I've driven a prefacelift NA around full taupo circuit for about 5 laps, thats about it!)
And I've never driven an AE8*.

It seems logical to me, that the AW11 would be the platform of choice out of the two... But it seems that the AE86 has more of a reputation, and more motorsport history?

Now I dont want this to turn into an AE8* shit slinging thread, as threads like this always seem to degrade to. Serious replies only! Or Revhead will hit you with his Baaaah stick, oh no wait that's something completely different, I meant the Baaaaan stick. :P

first couple of possibilities that spring to mind...

ae86 i guess would be a lot simpler to work on. although if ur comfortable fixing a fwd then an aw11 shouldnt be much harder.

maybe the on the limit handling of the aw11 would make it a little less accessible to less experienced drivers?

if initial D had featured an aw11 as the primary car would ae86's be cheap and aw11's grossly inflated?

Well there still seems to be a huge disparity between the number of AW11s around and AE86s.... I mean you see AW11s all the time, I see an AE once in a blue moon.. which is probably part of the reason for the price difference.

ae's arent really that uncommon tho, ae85's are everywhere, and the panels are interchangable. i dont see all that many aw11's.

id say they are both equally afflicted by rust issues.

i reckon that since they have limited power to start with, it would be a shame to waste any of it in corners. the better traction of the aw11 would be an advantage.

Well the lower the power of the cars, the less it matters about how much traction is available for corner exit etc.

The bluetop 4AGE in standard form is hardly a tire fryer.

AW11 for sure...at least they had an optional forced induction engine. My one seems to handle plenty well, and with some good shocks and tyres I reckon it'd be a right weapon.

So disagree. ae86 = sore back from bending over etc.

aw11 with no spoiler = aws place to lean on and sit whilst working etc.

I so reckon aw has more potential :? simply because the motor is closer to the right place.

Well, think of all the mods you can do with the difference in price between an AW11 and an AE86. a good AW11 is about the price of an AE85 and AE85's in standard form are far from a driving experience. Plus AW11 parts don't fetch such inflated prices as AE86's. Don't forget that a SC AW11 is still cheaper than an AE86 and that's a no contest really.

I agree, although I have a fetish for the ae86, an aw11 would make a much more practical track car.

I think you should buy an avenger and go rallying. :o

If i had to choose i would buy an ae86...

BUT the aw11 is the car to buy, mid engine rear wheel drive, its designed for the track mate.

What do you want to do ... race, rally, clubsport ... I would say Rally and Clubsport (Autocrossing and stuff) would suit AE86, race would suit AW11.

For real ultimate powah I'm not sure, but I would have assumed (possibly incorrectly) that it would be more possible to transplant into an AE86 (or KE70) stronger gearboxes. diffs, axles into the car for more reliability.

I was absolutely stunned by how capable my old bog stock AW11 was around Manfeild simply with the addition of sticky tyres. It lapped all day long at 1:30, while the mechanically identical AE82 was a 1:34 car, as was the AE92 until further changes to the car got it down to 1:28's over a couple of years, and a couple of thousand spent. However, on loose surfaces, the AW11 sucked. There's no other polite way to describe it, it was just ugly to drive on grass etc.

Yeah my SW20 was utter balls at the motorkhana thing I took it to on grass.
But that sort of stuff doesnt really interest me, I got fairly bored after a few runs TBH.
Trackdays etc are more up my alley (but a crap load more expensive!)

I know a EP82 starlet is cabable of beating AE86 round the track.
Both std too. was quite suprised would have though the FR layout would have been better

Dave: When I replace the rear pads and the front bumper support on the AW, I'll bring it out west and you can have a blat one night.
Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.

I own a 86 but i surely swap for a Aw11 if I'll do a TimeAttack machine since i think MR suits better track action ;)

Nah, its okay.

As I said I took one for a cane around taupo, so I've got a pretty good idea of what the AW is like. Cant say I've ever driven an 86 before, and it's unlikely that I will.

Not that this was the point of this poll at all, haha.

If the car has anywhere near enough power I'd take an FR car over anything MR or FF.

Sure the MR may have a better balance on scales in theroy,
but too much weight in and on the rear is even more of a problem than too much in the front.

My car is FR and is almost 50/50 wieght split, and with a FR car you dont end up with a pendulium in the boot.
Had a MR for a while and hated it.

thats coz u is a pussy!! :P

the aw11 is a bit heavier than an ae86.
so in stock form, its hard to say
with similar mods i think the aw11 would be a bit faster

i really do beleive the aw11 is waaay underated.

i found mine quite good in loose surfaces, however that wasnt tight paddock bashing, rather the odd spot of gravel roading.

they definitly arnt as tail happy as ppl claim.

funnily enough a similar style to driving a FWD works well, ie early braking and drive through the corner with the throttle

crapest post ever. so vague. firstly EP82, turbo or not? track? same driver? driver experience with each car? same conditions?

so many variables, such BS.

Au bei, u c tht ae82 smoke tht TT leagcy? woulda fout teh 4WD woulda been beta

can't belive I even took the time to write that out, $&#$% I must be bored

Still it was truly convicing, im going to go sell my cars and buy a fleet of EP82s and pwn ae86s @ the track.
