Modified mk3 supra gearbox Xmember.

Postby Quint » Tue Mar 27, 2007 5:56 pm

Theres always people asking about this and i've recently changed my ones.
$&#$% arse warrant guy spent an hour on my car trying to fail it and he did on modifed engine mounts without a cert... said the 8mm plate steel wasn't strong enough... even though it had been in there for atleast 2 years and showed NO signs of fatigue what-so-ever.

Anyways, i made up some new, more stealthy ones.

The leave the xmember in the orginal place on the chassis tunnel and change where the bottom of the gbox actually mounts to the top of the mount.

Before they were painted, u can see how they change position of the bolt holes, one of the holes will just be used to give additional support to the new bracket, will be PLENTY strong enough, and hopefully near invisible :)

Hope that this helps anyone that is looking at a mk3 conversion :)

its amazing what you can get away with if it looks standard. I had to modify my gearbox cross (previous owner had column change converted to floor change in the dirty old 2wd ute. ) They'd cut the old cross member out and welded some box steel underneath, which was dangerous, however only got picked up on the third warrant since I'd owned the vehicle. To cut a long story short I replaced the dodgy cross member with a modified 4wd hilux cross member and hasnt even turned an eye since
