if the 86 was a nissan I rekon it would have been remade...they take more risks and build things a little different. Toyota are pretty safe in their production now days imo.

a bit of trivia - the ZZT celica ( 7th gen ) was also meant to be RWD , but a survey takin in america , which straight off is the stupidest place to ever get a correct answer , said that the car was more likely to sell as a FWD car ..

Whatever will be built , they will look to the yankee's first unless the japs grow some balls and look outside of them for a change and see that theresa a greater market of enthusiasts outside of the staes for cars like this

Would have thought the yanks would prefer a car in a rwd format? :?

yea they really need to stop @ss kissing.

but the yanks are one of the biggest car markets, so the car company's kinda have to follow the trend. we talked about this in our marketing class, its not that the car makers don't want to build a car for YOUR needs, they have to build a car to meet the needs of many consumer sects. your(my) sect is just too small. they'd have to build many more platforms to meet everyones interests, and to do so would be too costly, all they care about is selling as many units of the same modal as possible.

but the reason Toyota has be so successful is because they know how to make cars that can stretch over to other consumer sects, thus selling more of the same modal(with minimal change)

Henry Ford was able to say that because he had an almost complete monopoly on the car market, if an American wanted a car it was almost certainly going to be a Ford. He could make cars however he wanted to and the people would still have to buy them.

You're right in saying that toyota make their product cover as many sectors as possible, and now they are taking this philosophy another step further by discontinuing their sports cars, instead offering "sports packages" on their more mundane models, like the Camry.

On the plus side, there have been reports of Toyota testing a heavily disguised MR roadster, it seems that despite a discontinuation of the MR-S announced for mid this year the MR2 family is not dead yet.

NZ has next to no say on what toyota does.

why? our total years sales, are less than a lot of dealers do in one MONTH in the states.... thats not a years sale form the dealership i work at, but all sales in nz.....
we are less than 1% of 1% of toyotas world sales.

to put it another way..... we all but dont exsist.

They should sell the cars super cheap then :P

Apart from the lack of population, i think the main reason is that we have so many 2nd hand imports to choose from that new cars don't appeal as much.

On topic: I say no new ae86...makes mine worth more

I reckon itd b badged as something like a Lexus AE200. Theyd load her up with airbags, traction control, EBD, ESC, ABS, every acronym you can think of. then theyd also bring them out with autos............................................

Just think how cheap it would be to build a RWD 16v basic car these days. Providing they don't go overboard with mod cons and creature comforts they could put a pretty damn good car togeether for cheap. However it wouldn't ever happen, cause according to governments around the world cars without ABS and TCS and airbags are death traps and will kill anybody who dares drive them. Yes, a new 86 woudl be nice, but it is not likely to be a cheap sporty little car. (Not that the old ones are cheap now)

The thing that i dont get, is why a small RWD sporty car cant be produced. Even if it does have creature comforts and safety crap, theres always ways around it. 350z's have a button for traction control, but it doesnt turn it all the way 'off' when you push the button. Unless you unplug the fuse for it.

And on top of that, i imagine there wasnt another 86 successor produced earlier, because it would cannibalise sales of other cars - the MR2, the FX-GT corollas, the supra to a lesser extent. Even if it was produced after those cars were discontinued, then it would cannabalise sales of the altezza.

so perhaps now that there is _nothing_ that toyota has in the sporty RWD sector, they are looking at bringing back a cult icon.

it takes time for these things to show up, how many years have people been speculating about the 'new supra'? and only just now are we getting concepts that sorta suggest somethings up..

how mnay of them would they sell new?
think about it, as cool as WE think it is, how many ppl who would like one would pay 30-40k for one?

now that there is no form of motorsport that would require that kind of car for toyota to promote itself, its just not going to happen.

toyota will have new sports models out soon. most probably with a, if not soley hybrid version

Damn man, is it gold plated or something?!
Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.
