Trade Me is probably the best bet, though your local wreckers will be able to source you one with a warranty.
As for cost - very little. 2E's arent particularly sought after, you might be able to pick up one for next to nothing.
Edit: Seeing as how I'm already looking through the appropriate section, here you go

1988 KE70 Wagon - Slowly rusting
1990 NA6 MX-5 - because reasons
2018 Ranger - Because workcar
1997 FD3S RX-7 Type R - all brap, all the time
OMG so shiny!

expect to pay somewhere between $350 and $450 for one with a 3 month warranty (that'll most likely be +gst) (EE80/90/100) thru to $550-600 for something having done low k's with a 6 months warranty (outta a NZ new EP90/EE110 or similar)

we had a guy at work doing work experience, who picked up a 12A turbo engine, complete with the turbo etc etc etc bolted to it, just like a normal person picks up a bag of cement, that'd be approx the same weight as a 2E if not a tad more

Yep. good times at the wreckers.

another time, maori guy came in, after a "neuveate" (New V8) for a falcon or something, anyway

mate shows him 2 motors, 1 in mint condition (runner/tested etc), 1 unknown (no warranty etc).

Maori guy looks hard at both motors, grabs the fan on the first one (the mint one) spins it, it whirls round.

Grabs the fan on the unknown motor, tries to spin it, it doesnt move.

Instantly looks up to my mate "Yeah i'll take the unknown one". Mate is like "why are you taking that one? when i've just championed this other one as being mint??"

"Au, its got no comphresshion"
