Aparently its a toyota genuine air filter... but it has not been changed for quite a while i have just discovered

Nope, not yet.... something he might try... ill give him a prod in that direction but oxy sensors are quite expensive...

Is the airflow meter clean? (you can unscrew 2 bolts and clean it with carb cleaner, even if it is not the cause of the problem, it is good practice to do so).

I've now heard this from two people in the last week. Apparently Caldina's are prone to getting crap stuck inside them (somehow bypassing the filter?).

So just to be clear here; the AFM is the circular thing on the back of the air box? Just spray carb cleaner inside it and thats it?

I normally do the throttle but never thought look at the afm.

It was caused by a broken sensor from a cowboy mechanic who did a prepurchase check for me.
Once the sensor was fixed, the problem became considerably better but didn't go away.

I did find however, that it has been sweet after resetting the EFI. It sounds like your mates issues are a bit more serious than mine but there's no harm in giving it a go.

did you put the correct plugs back in? must be platinum, i think pk20r8.
i had a similar problem with another caldina, it was the plugs ( just standard type ones ) and also the 02 sensor was stuffed, have you checked the output values?
