bolt on spacers

Postby deaf_rattle » Tue Apr 03, 2007 10:28 am

I have been told you can get bolt on spacers certified.

is it an easy process to get them certified? will get them done when the engine/suspension mods get done.

also, how safe are they?

Thinking abotu some 25mm bolt on spacers so that my stock wheels can clear my new 4 pot calipers. and then in future running some different wheels.

thanks

2.5 Wheel Spacing and Adaptation Requirements

2.5 (1) A wheel spacer fitted to a low volume vehicle between the wheel and hub assembly, other than that fitted as original equipment by a high volume vehicle manufacturer, must:

(a) have a maximum spacing of each wheel away from the hub surface of 20mm; and

(b) be set-screwed or attached by another secure method to either the wheel or hub face; and

(c) be manufactured from a solid block of suitable material; and

(d) have two machined or die-cast surfaces that are parallel, and contain minimal indentations or irregularities; and

(e) be fitted as to ensure the wheel locates snugly over the hub spigot so that the hub carries the weight of the wheel assembly instead of the wheel studs, or where there is a mis-match between the hub spigot and the wheel center, a close tolerance center bore locator must be provided; and

(f) maintain, with the spacer fitted, not less than the minimum required amount of wheel stud or bolt engagement specified in 2.4(4).

They are super easy to cert, he will look at them, make sure theyre of reasonable quality, check they are true and located properly, and that will be it. Just make sure you buy descent ones at a minimum of 22mm.

Had mine certed last week, got them from Drury Tires, no worries.

Oh theyre just slip on, sweet as. Not legal or certifiable. But chuck em on and remove for warrants/insurance assesor check once you crash and kills heaps of innocent kids.

Reson why I say a minimum of 22mm is for bolt ons, on trade me there are 15mm ones and shit. Ya need to remember that theres a wheel nut that holds the spacer on and an average descent wheel nut is probaly 20mm. So if ya use a 15mm Id hate to see how big the wheel nut is, wouldnt trust them as far as I could kick them. 22mm+ give ya heaps of meat for the wheel nut to dig into and the wheel to clear it.

If ya get what im getting at.

Long story short, 8mm ones are just slip on, throw em on and make sure ya get a few descent full turns of the wheels nuts.

Not certifiable, but once you slip them on put your wheel on, and see how many full turns you can get on the wheel nut before its $&#$% tight.

I was using 8mm's before I got my 25mm bolt ons, I got about 5 full turns, legal requirment is 7 I think, dont quote me on it, but 5 is safe as. I personalyl wouldnt use them if I had less than that. Just take it for a drive once theyre fitted and check theyre still tight etc. Will be fine.

You can get longer stock wheel studs though, but id just check with your stock ones and see how many turns you get.

Even if you had longer wheel studs its safer, although im 99% sure its still not legal.

that whole bit that postfach posted is about slip on spacers, the bolt on ones are called adaptors, you just have to have slip on ones screwed to the hub and have longer wheel studs to accomodate.
When in doubt, down and out.
