Best for what???

It all depends what you want it for and what mods to you choose to do to it.

There are two types of redtop as well. One is small port and the other is largeport with TVIS.

'Worst'

Blue Top Big Port 88kw
Red Top TVIS Big Port 88kw
Red Top Smallport 100kw
Silvertop 65kw
Blacktop 112kw
VTEC TOP 1,000,000KW

'Best'

Thats the way it goes for N/A, with 100% accurate power figures.

Blacktop is a potential grenade. So I would put it as a theoretical best.
I also would rank the redtop smallport as better than the silvertop... couldn't give a good reason why tho, anyone got dyno plots?

Blue Top Big Port 88kw - Came in AE82, AE86, AA63* First model, 16V small crank (3 rib block), cheap and nasty, good bang for buck. Great for RWD swap

Red Top TVIS Big Port 88kw - Came In early AE92's* Came after the Blue top, same head, altho has slightly less duration cams compared to blue top. And also has the bigger crank the same as all of the following models. (recognised by the 7 rib block)

Red Top Smallport 100kw - Later Lodel AE92's* made from 89 onwards, has smaller ports than the earlier 2 which resulted in more power and no more TVIS. 100kw from standard, strong as, potential for big power, down side is they are quite sought after and dear. (many believe they are a better package than the silvertop)

Silvertop 65kw - AE101* First of the 20V engines, pretty good altho most of them are flogged out, mistreated and make next to no power. Have a bad reputation. If ya get a good one theyre fine. Hard to use for RWD swap due to the dizzy sticking out the back of the head.

Blacktop 112kw - AE111* Last of the normal 4AGEs, same as silvertop, but with much better head, and cam design. Altho the rods are small and even stock dont like to sit at 8000rpm for long, many have stuck thier head outside the block for a look.

VTEC TOP 1,000,000KW - If you dont know, dont ask, you arent worthy of knowing. Even if you did get hold of one and got it installed youd probaly hit 4500rpm and your brain would turn inside out and youd spontaneously combust anyway.

Tell us why youre asking and what youre trying to achieve and we can point you to which one is best.

and to save me wasting half my day typing that out you could have looked and found this in the FAQ section. Although not entirely true its not a bad table.

hmmm, cheers guys.
just wondering really...i used to have a old 91 FXGT with a black top (damn, that was almost 10 years ago), and i couldnt kill it at all, and i R-Lined every gear up and down...and its was hell fast. To this day me and the mates still say that it must have had the internals done or something cause there wasnt much (at that time) that could beat it!!!
(yes i know, everything would beat it these days...lol)

I was manly wondering cause i wanted a project car really...not that i have enough projects on at the moment..lol
Just something to toy around with, learn abit from, and just have some fun really.

hmmmmm, i know u say "If you dont know, dont ask, you arent worthy of knowing"....but pllleeeeaaasseeee tell me....WTF IS THAT!?!?!?!?

The silver and blacktops were 20valves and have better looking tappet/rocker covers. So it would be obvoius if you had a 20v.

I Sum how doubt the silvertop figure. Even a sick one will give 80Kw, normal = 90+.

Haha, I never thought you would be the first silvertop owner to reply with a serious response.

my 175 000km silvertop thrashed frequently got 78kw @7800 at wheels. and held it all the way to rev cut, torque drop off was minimal. standard as, expect exhaust and pod.
need to get 10k20v to get his dyno to see what a "tuned" 20v puts out.

blacktop came out in 95

i call bullshit on the blacktop head being better than the silvertop
amoungst other things in this thread

if building a race engine, imo the silvertop is the one to start with

if wanting one for a conversion in a road car then black top.

if going rwd the small port if you dont want to relocate/bugger round with the dizzy, other wise as above.

all are very good engines when taking into account the age and thier peers.

so my list goes:
1: silvertop
2: smallport
3: blacktop
4=: the bigport engines

smallport or bigport?

I take it it'll be small port cause it doesn't have TVIS?

4agze is the same as 4age of the same year

so bigport 4age = bigport 4agze
