Battery Wire.

I need some 0ga wire for the new battery I'm mounting in the boot. As I know very little about what kind of wires etc to use I thought I might post up on here for those in the 'know' when it comes to electrical stuff.

I am currently consider some of the 25/35mm Welding Flex Wire that BOC has for sale. Would that be suitable for what I want to do or do I need a different brand or type of wire for the jobbie?

Part number from BOC is WC25 or WC35.
It should be on their site if you go in to the webshop. Sorry I don't have the URL handy as it's all dynamic stuff so won't work if I copy/paste it.

I remember Wayne mentioning something about thin strand as well?

If this is the right stuff I don't suppose anyone here works for BOC?

SW20's have a big thick battery cable that is pretty long. Might be too short for a larger car though.

Welding wire is good stuff, High current capacity, & great for going around corners. It does require a tool to crimp it correctly, but talk to the retailer, as more often than not you can borrow or rent this from them.

Anyone tried the Projecta single or double core wire? Looks like it's designed for the job.

What would you recommend out of the wires they have available there fivebob? I am useless when it comes to wires/electrical stuff.

Not sure what you requirements are. 25-35mm should be enough, but it all depends on the current draw and the distance. Obviously thicker cable will give you a lower voltage drop and greater current carrying capacity.


BTW I just did some more checking and found that this cable is manufactured by Brown and Watson and also sold under the Narva brand, and the double core stuff is also sold as welding cable

Thanks fivebob, I'll see if I contact that place tomorrow and get some wire. I'll probably go for the 35mm double core stuff as I suspect that will be allot better quality.

unless you go oxy free most fine stranded cable with be of equal quality
personally i go for teh double isulated
just cause i like teh exra safe feeling
it only takes a few seconds for a short to make a cable fill yoru cabin with smoke..........in fact its almost instant :d

I use 50mm welding wire from BOC at $10/m. Double insulation.

then a 120amp circuit breaker at teh battery

circuit breaker starts 4AGE no problems, may need bigger if this is going on your jz motor, circuit breaker from jaycar

I used custom crimps that I made from copper pipe, basically bend one side of the copper pipe flat, drill a hole in it, stick the wire in the end still round, and close it up with a hammer and chisle works really well

have done this on all my cars, no problems

i used double insulated 50mm stuff, hasd 2 buy a bit of 35mm wire (biggest the store had) which costed round $25 a metre!! im using the standard fuses 2

go to ja russell or ideal electrical and talk to them, probably cheaper and theyll know what theyre talking about

get lugs from places like ja russell / ideal electrical / electrical wholesaler.
Get them to crimp them as well as they will normally do it for free and you get a perfect hex crimp..

Cliff can you get me a price on some good quality 35-50mm double insulated fine strand wire? I need 6m worth.

I used 25mm² welding cable and its perfectly fine. i don't have a stereo but i'm sure it would be perfectly capable since we run huge LED screens with it drawing hundreds of amps at 48V. pm me if you want some, i can get 10m of it for you free of charge and lend you the crimping tool.
