good grounding? As in engine connected to chassis and battery with a thick cable. If you relocate the battery you will have to connect engine/gearbox with thicker cable to chassis as stock setup relies on the thick battery negative terminal cable and not so thick engine to chassis.

i suspect they did die at the same time, theres only the factory engine to chassie grounings, tiny cables too. one on each side of engine bay.

alternator.

no only the AW11 GZE is external reg.

Chances are that if you did that to the alternator you have had the battery connected backwards.

What fried on the ECU?

I doubt that the ECU would be fried from reverse connection. For the sake of a <1c diode I'm sure the factory would've protected it.
I actually know someone who connected the battery backwards (sorry, but yes a blond girl!!!). And it fried all the fusible links and big fuses, but didn't do any other damage. That was a early ninties RAV...

What did you do when it died? There might be a clue there too. Did you try starting the car and it spontaneous died? Or was it running for a bit then died? Or was it just dead one morning?

pulled engine out for 4 months, put back in, alternator drained power and ecu was $&#$%, caused it to idle at 3k
