W55/W57 gearboxes.

Postby matt dunn » Wed Apr 11, 2007 8:52 pm

After some info and identification of some of these gearboxes.

I want to order some gearbox parts from Toyota but need chassis numbers from some cars to make sure I get the right parts.

I run a gearbox with a shifter location the same as this pic.

http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Motor ... 442065.htm

I want a chassis number of a car that comes with a w55/w56/w57 etc etc with the shifter in this position
so i can order a part from it.

Also want the chassis number of a car that has W57 on the chassis tag,
so i can order some parts specific to those ratio's.

Thanks

Matt

I think I have that position W55 Matt. It is still in the car at the moment.
Once it is out I will confirm the position and post the build plate...
Do you have a measurement from front of box (not bell) to centre of shifter hole? Just to avoid hassles.

I used to think that the orange and green tictacs gave you special powers. The orange ones would make you stronger and the green ones would make you faster. So i used to eat some green ones and run around my lounge as fast as i could, then eat the orange ones and try to pick up the sofa. I wish it were true!

I'll have a look at the position of my w55 and grab a pic of the ID plate tonight.

ive seen a few jdm gx61 with the mid/rear shifter position like in pic.
my '85 'nz new' ma61 celica/supra has factory w57 in it.. with front shifter position. ma61's usually have w58 in them so it may be the 'nz new' ones that got the 57? hope that helps

the 4 common positions...

front
Image ta63 + tt142 GT-T 3tgte w55, ma61?

mid
Image CE71 wagon W51 or W56

mid-rear
Image 80's cressida's

rear
Image *a70 supra

the easy way to remember which position is which by looking at what angle the shifter housing slopes up from the end of the alloy tailhousing (where metal output shaft shroud fits onto)
front = angle forward
mid = straight up
mid/rear = angle rearward
rear = horizontally rearward

My GX81 uses mid rear position.
The w58 out of a GA70 has that position so I'd Say *A70's and maybe *A60's would be rear shifter
