supercharger difference

Postby the fallen303 » Tue Apr 17, 2007 8:44 pm

hey guys, hypothetical question. two identical engines, one with a supercharger setup, with water-air i/c, one without. compression the same, etc. how much difference in the performance of the engines would there be if the supercharger was freewheeling? would the supercharger create much of a restriction on the intake?

for example, two silvertops, both running link ecus to control a/f, compression, pistons, exhaust, etc, all the same, only difference being one has gze s/c setup. if the s/c is turned off, would both setups perform the same in the same car? i know that with the 4agze that if you turn the s/c off it is pretty gutless, but is that more due to the engine being setup for forced induction and it not boosting, than the restriction of the extra items in the intake path?

yeah i know, probably confusing as hell, lol, but any help would be great.

there would be quite a bit of difference due to the restriction posed by the s/c.
the ABV is quite a small area to flow through, then theres the extra intake length of the s/c set up.

Mine isn't too bad below 5000rpm, but you just can't get it to rev past 6000 with out boost though, the car feels very off tune with out the charger and quite dead. Ok for driving round, but you wont go any where quick. I'd say about the same speed as a 3au

Hah - my old s/c AE101 trueno. I had a switch so I could turn the supercharger off... I found that I could do 150kph (one night on the way back from Napier to Taupo on the way back from a Queens Birthday weekend Toyspeed cruise). Hee, hee.

I used to think that the orange and green tictacs gave you special powers. The orange ones would make you stronger and the green ones would make you faster. So i used to eat some green ones and run around my lounge as fast as i could, then eat the orange ones and try to pick up the sofa. I wish it were true!

I also have a switch to manually operate my supercharger. With the s/c on the performance is great, with it off it felt like a 5a-fe Corolla. slow and boring.
