Potential Of 4AGE 20V

Postby [b|indsp0tt] » Fri Apr 20, 2007 8:27 pm

Just a quick question. Was having a discussion with my boss today about 4AGE 20 valves, when he mentioned that he could build a 270hp @ the wheel 4AGE (He is a mechanic with around 12-14 years experience).

I think that 270HP out of a 1.6ltr NA engine is stretching it (and I've heard about the Group Atlantic 4AGE with something like 250HP),even with a very large budget(I'm thinking like $30k)

So please school me in the ways of 20v,because I'd love to know if this is possible.

Cheers

Naturally Aspirated 270 hp like the Formula Atlantc NA 230hp (i think) is costly, but a turbo charger can do it.

Yeah I have no doubt that a turbo 4AGE could do those kind of numbers,I'm strictly talking about Naturally Aspirated.

Is it possible?Even if it is,I'm thinking the cams are going to be so aggressive that it won't idle, and will be a huge hassle to drive (I'm talking about having this engine in a street car.Obviously not daily driven, but definitely able to be driven on the road.

He says that he used to have an old corolla with a 4AGE 16v that he built (cams/valves/port n polish - the works basically) that made 220HP at the wheels on the Torque Performance dyno way back in like '98 or '99.

 any 1600cc engine that makes 220 atw wont be much fun on the road

220hp at the wheels has to be 260 -280 at the flywheel, I dont think trd have enough bits to make that happen, or anyone else for that matter! But I would love to watch someone try to acheive that on a dyno, while I stood there with my stopwatch

Group A silvertop is about 240hp @ 11,000RPM, and the Formula Atlantic 16v is about 220hp @ 10,000RPM.

Torque (Well, as far as a 1.6l is concerned) doesn't begin til about 6000RPM.

Building something like that takes a lotta bling bling!

I agree with nzae86. That sort of power would require more than just come aggressive cams and some porting/polishing. You'd need to replace pistons, rods, crank blah blah blah. Just about everything except the head and the block!
Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.

Yeah, thats what I'm thinking. He said it cost him $6k to build his old 4AGE (220HP),without any labour charge because he did it himself.

Has anyone got any links to examples of high power 4AGE 20V??He claims to have seen race cars in Japan on the net packing around 270HP.

I've seen 20k engines that won't pull 200hp at the wheels. For 220whp you'd be talking in the realms of 6k for the dry sump alone.

270whp from a 4age... very very much in doubt.

Well I must be doing something wrong the engine in my current rally car has had more than that spent on it and it is only a good honest 100kw (135bhp) at the wheels . My atlantic engine will be about 3 - 4 times the cost and I am hoping for about a reliable 220hp at the flywheel. The head work alone on the atlantic engine would probably amount to 6k! and this engine is the real deal not just "atlantic spec"

6k? so hes wanted for theft? coz if you shopped around, that would get you the crank you need for those rpms/hp.

yes i reckon you could build a 20v or 16v 4age that made that power.
but it would be mega $$$$ and be running on methanol or nitro!

those atlantic engines had 20years development behind them...

someone had to say it, if you want a high revving 4cyl powerful NA, buy a honda vtec motor for as cheap as you boss is saying.

i went for a ride with deanis in his crx, has 151kw roughly atw, and with an extra odd 150-160kgs, the thing still hauled ass to just under 9000rpm. impressed me alot.

No offence to the mans mechanical experience, but just because he has worked as a mechanic for 14 years it dosent mean he dosent speak a load of crap (plenty of people out there who do). If he can back it up with a dyno chart or something thats kewl. If he cant, he probably just had a nice prepped 4age.
also, anyone can 'claim to have seen race cars in Japan on the net packing around 270HP.'
ask to see the proof if it concerns you

he must work in rotorua? cause i had a cabbage (opps i mean customer) who reckoned a guy in rotorua was building him a 290HP (at the flywheel) n/a 4AGE for $4-5K. I just said to him. - dude, you're pulling it. and walked outta the office.

An atlantic motor on methanol, might get close to 270 HP at the engine, but i'd think a 0 fell off his estimated build cost.

Thats exactly why I created this thread, because I think it's just not feasible for what he's claiming.I highly doubt he has a dyno graph for his 4AGE but I'll ask anyways. And no he's not from Rotorua,he's from Auckland.
