Vans

Hey

Looking at getting a diesel van of some sort.
Or something reliable! Want to spend about 2500 which is on the cheap side for a van.

Will be using it to go to the mountain and to the beach and drive it every day as a daily driver.
So reliability and economy top the list.
Don't care about performance, i have my 4agte ke for that.

Those of you in courier companies, what vans are reliable?
The Toyota Hi-Aces?
Those Mazda vans?
The Ford ones?
The Mitsi L300's?

Not wanting something like a lite-ace, want a commercial hi-ace styled one. Not the people mover styled ones! Bigger the better, some hiaces are pretty long which is sweet.

Need to replace my nissan diesel which doesn't start in the mornings, after its been running its sweet. Its got a good battery (550cca) brand new glowplugs etc but feel injector timing is off or engine is low compression in a cylinder or two. Not so reliable and costly to fix! I want something that will go and go and go. Its a 1700cc NA diesel !!!!

Cheers.

My current work van is a 3.0 N/A Diesel Hiace, It aint the fastest but is economical as hell and tyres, cam belt and wheel alignments are the only expenses (other than regular services) its had in the 178,000 km its done since new. We got a new Mazda diesel last year for a workmate and that was a huge mistake, nothing but trouble. It is too low geared for a diesel, has been recalled for brake problems and has had numerous steering issues.

I reccomend finding a higher Km late model Hiace (ex courier or taxi) for a cheap reliable van. So long as you look after it and it has a decent service history it will serve you well.

you can pretty much forget getting a 2.8 hiace for $2500.
and if you do find one, i wouldnt buy it!!

keep saving for a 90 onwards NZ new 2.8.

we use fords at work and i moved house on an old 87 or so ford, no issues.. Like most fords they may be a sack of shit, but there a fairly reliable sack of shit.

just look at my ford festiva, under a grand and goes hard with no worries at all.

I had a work mid 90's ford econovan (1800cc) for several years. never treated it well, it never missed a beat (mileage was getting up there too). I rate them for a van.

edit, sorry, was a petrol, forgot you stated diesel

we have a 96 hiace at work, its just a 2.4 diesel...DX i think.most basic model - has aircon and power steering and thats it. never missed a beat in 4 years aside from a blown clutch. and it gets thrashed day in day out. goes ok...keeps up with a 1.6 pulsar off the line

got an old petrol econovan as well its quick but is a total POS (no power steer, the seating position and driver comfort is shocking..even for an old van. it also need rust repairs every time it goes for a wof, sometimes in places that have already been welded....IMO save up a bit and buy a decent toyota one they're the way to go

we've got a late 80s mitsi L200 ute at work, gone all the way to the moon and half way back again, has no guts at all, the exhaust rotted away and we had to get almost the entire system replaced, i have no idea when it last had a service, yet i still can't break it :( only thing mechanical thats gone wrong with it in the 3 years i've been working there (i dont count a rotting exhaust as mech) is that the bolts that hold the shifter in place broke/fell out and it got stuck in third gear, which wasn't too cool.

NZFS has a few Nissan Urvan Diesels,

Rimutaka 4926 as an example. They go pretty well, 3.2L Diesel, 5 speed, A/C and Power Steering but no other things to break...

That one there, has around 20,000km on it and is 7 years old, so not really the best example! But yeah you want to hunt around for a Hiace if you can, seen nice mid-90s examples going for between 2500 and 4500.
