300 hours at redline..

Postby snwtoy » Sun Apr 22, 2007 7:15 pm

Has anyone else seen the hyundai ad with the production engine in a lab at reline for over 300 hours?

Is it wrong to be impressed? Sure they feed it a constant diet of high octane fuel, clean oil, clean coolant etc.. but still... 300 hours!!

Exactly what I was thinking. If it's not loaded up, it probably doesnt count for much does it?

Also you'll notice that its redline is 6000rpm, it's hardly screaming its head off. :)

An engine

Postby andyztouring » Sun Apr 22, 2007 7:57 pm

An engine continuously running is never going to wear out, most engine wear and tear happens when the engine is cold,or run out of oil and/or coolant and as everyone has said there is no load so its pretty much a pointless exercise.

Its not that impressive as has been said...
I mean engine failures from oil starvation, over heating or detonation normally right?

And they have all those controlled so...meh

compressors are left on for months sometimes. im not surprised about the engine at all.
start up is what kills engines.

they did similar tests with the lexus v8 when they were doin the R&D

It doesnt matter what people like us think... because we dont buy brand new cars. :P

It's the general non car oriented public which will be impressed by this ad, which I'd imagine has worked well.

Didn't Mazda do something like that with a rotary for some stupidly long time? Like months or something.....
Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.

Toyota made the 20v fail after extended time at the redline as a failsafe. For if it were not for this, it would create a rip in the space-time continuum and eventually destroy the universe!

Are you guys sure? 300 Hours is a LOOONG time, even for no load.

How long do you think your engine would last if you set it to 6000rpm and just lef it? :?

Detergent is not a recommended lubricant for engines :P

Its' ridiculous, and as RomanV said, to impress the non-car oriented public.

It wouldn't be very good advertising if it spat a rod after an hour or two, even if it did, they wouldn't show it. Its' neither here nor there, I would be more impressed by Hyundai announcing that they were reducing emissions, and coming up with alternative-fuel engines, not running a V6 for a couple of weeks, wasting thousands of litres of fuel, and producing several tonnes of carbon monoxide, just to attempt to prove that their engines are reliable!

Idiots.
