1989 toyota supra

Hey guys my old man is currently looking at an 89 Supra just wanted to know what are the good things and bad things to look out for in these models? He said its got the widebody style ( coke bottle shape? ) and I assume the engine is an 7MGTE?

any advice/tips/storys appreciated thanks

being an 89, it will have one of 4 engines. (pretty sure jza70s are 90 onwards)

1gge (2l non turbo) GA70
1ggte (2l twin turbo) GA70
7mge (3l non turbo) MA70
7mgte (3l turbo) MA70

The pick of that bunch would be the 7mgte (MA70) but be wary that unless its been maintained well, its very likely to crap out on you soon after buying.

Check the torque settings on the headbolts and condition of oil and water.

It is a 7MGTE, only done 60k and is mint inside and out , and unmolested ..

My research is indicating head gasket problems at less than 100k are common, heard of these issues ??

hey

From the factory the headbolts are torqued down incorrectly (54 ft lbs from memory)

To give you an idea how low that is, my arp stud kit recommended 82 ft lbs (or there abouts)

most of the time if you get in there and torque them correctly you will be fine.

In the worse cases, the head bolts can be undone by hand due to the low torque settings and the factory bolts stretching.

If the compression is still fine and there are no other signs of a bhg, i would recommend buying some ARPs and fitting them

You can do one at a time with no need to remove the head.

Yeah, Toyota specify something like 54ft/lbs of torque on the head bolts where it should be in the 90's or something? Matt would know.

A. He already has one oversized vehicle in the garage and B. he should be investing more into said behemoth.
