auckland to get 10c petrol hike

I'm not against PT, I just don't believe that petrol taxes should be paying for it.
If its so important for economic growth then the money should come from our general taxes from all over NZ.

Damn, we all ready pay 15c extra for petrol over here on the island, but I bet we will have to pay the 10c ontop of that.

I all ready spend $300 a month on public transport, the buses are hopless. It's just luck of the draw if I make the boat home or not as most of the time the buses just don't show.

I honastly wouldn't mind if the tax went on our roads, but sadly it wont and never will.

well.. that would be logical.. but NZ doesn't like to operate on logical it seems..

tolls would be the way to go IMO..

hell, if we had tolls maybe our transmission gully in welly would have been built by now..

You guys need to harden up. If you don't like it, don't live in Auckland.

Redmist wrote:How paradoxical. You want everyone else to pay for Auckland roads but you dont want everyone else to have a say in that fact. And for some reason you seem to think Auckland is the hub of New Zealand.
In actual fact it would appear that Auckland would be destroyed without the rest of the country. When us southerners cut off your power for several months it didnt seem to affect me. Other than broaden the smile on my face. And without my petrol tax surcharge there wouldnt be transport infrastructure in Auckland.
More to the point, why do you think that people that dont benefit from a service pay for that service?

Seconded. :)

all you aucklanders should just put a 3k into your cars. then you wouldnt have to worry so much about the price of petrol.

OH look an Auckland vs the rest of the country debate here again.......

This is why we never win the world cup guys too much in house fighting its what makes the country weak.

People move to auckland from the south, so in a way we are your children up here in auckland so why you got to hate?.

Taxes are paid for the Country to develop, if you wanna bitch at taxes on gas look at the government, they seem to be getting away with murder.

Did you all forget that the government is sitting on billions of surplus money? like hell we already have 75% or more going back to the government in all these different taxes. enough is enough

How about instead of taxing people more they should cull spending, money by the government gets wasted daily, why are we sitting on this forum moaning at each other while the true enemy is helen and her army of overweight hencemen robbing our wealth and then pulling our strings so we bitch at each other.

i think Tolling is the way, every other country does it, User pays is best and its fair. noone will need to moan about tax going to other towns roads and those that dont use the road wont moan cause they wont have to pay for it.
If you want to use it pay a toll, simple, no issue.

We are getting arse raped, when will we wake up and notice this.

maybe we will continue to bitch in the background, where are our protestors, where is the "NO", what wrong with taking 5 mins to write your MP and say I dont want this, This is wrong stop making it hard to live in this country!

How can a population as small as ours waste so much money. I live in auckland i dont see why we need the roads. Traffic is fine, we are a city we will get congestion just like sydney, LA or London, those places have spent millions and still they have congestion, its never ending so lets just end it now, put the money back in our pocket so we can afford to take our kids to the zoo FFS

I have just emailed my MP, i suggest all aucklanders take 5mins to email their MPs.

We all should email our MPs about anything we are unhappy with, they should be earning their money and if they dont listen to us vote em ouT!.

lets get organised!

I guess i just thought that more people would think outside the box.
Its a fact that if the roads and infrastructure in new zealand (espeically its biggest centre Auckland) would benifit all of new zealand.

I have spent abit of time living outside of auckland I have found people outside of auckland to be more anti auckland than aucklanders are of non aucklanders. I shouldve known better than to post that expecting it not to turn into an arguement.

As mentioned by Snwtoy alot of the cost of petrol is already Tax, so why dont they just use petrol tax for roading type expenses.

Also alot of international visitors come in via auckland, making things easier for them, makes things better for other tourist spots in nz.

The other piece of road they are wanting to get done quicker is the main route through auckland. Not the busy roads that everyone in auckland uses. I would be happy to pay extra money if everyone was paying it as its not just a "user pays" deal (if it were, they would use tolls) There are other roads as well that it should be used for like up north near Kaitaia etc.

People need to take a breath and think about more than just themselves sometimes.

I hope my point is abit more obvious now.

You are obviosly never used proper train system.
If the train system done right, the cost of going on train should be much cheaper, trains should be very regular, and getting to places faster than cars.
It sucks to drive in Auclkand in a car. Traffic, morons on the road whome would never get their licences in be it in another country, no parking - these are some disadvantages of the car. I find it very stressfull, I feel like killing something/someone if I drive to city and try to find parking.
Cars are very in-efficient method of transport (atleast in a dense city).
I personally would rather get on the train, read some book or look at the scenery instead spending hours behind the wheel in the traffic, while some moron obviosly tries to run up your ass while other tries to cut you off.
Right now public transport is a big joke. It is more expensive (a lot more) than getting arround in a car, not really organised properly, routes are like tour buses would use to show the city to some turists. Trains only cover small part of Auckland. There is no sign in changes, obviously goverment does not know what it is doing - we don't need separate motorway for busses, what we need is trains system which connects all parts of Auckland (it is much cheaper to built train track then 2 lanes of motorway) also trains can carry a lot more passangers than 1 bus at a time. Busses are good to feed the train system on small local runs. That bus system they building over the shore - in my opinion it is a big mistake. I for one will not use it - it will not get me to penrose in time and money I am getting with car right now.

Well done for doing something proactive, I will also email my MP -a sensible step to take. And your previous post is the most reasonable thing said on this thread.

Thats actually a really good point.

I mean, I love driving. I'd probably commit seppuku if one day, all cars disappeared and there were never to be any again.
But using public transport would give you a chance to relax and not have to worry about dealing with road rage and inconsiderate people. That'd be good, because sometimes you come across some people that REALLY piss you off and it leaves you in a bad mood for hours.
Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.

Auckland needs to stop fixing its roads and fix its god damn public transport. Less people on the roads = less need for roads = less tax for me to pay.

just did a very quick tally up...

Auckland has approx over 1,400,000 people

so there is approxamtly 1,4000,000 cars.

say every tank is 50 litres that is 70,000,000 litres of fuel
(i know not every one has a 50lt tank but for argument sake)

70,000,000 x $1.619 = $113,330,000

apparently they need $560,000,000

say every one used that 50ltrs in a month
the money can be raised in just over 1 month.

i would be happy to pay so long as it actualy goes on what they need it for.

That calculation is a bit out since only 10c a litre is going towards it, not the full $1.619 but yes it should be short lived & relatively painless experience, but i bet they'll leave it on for years after its neccasary.

By my calculations it would be raised in 8 months, but i bet they leave it on for at least 2 years.
