Engine building

Postby TRD_ZERO » Wed Apr 25, 2007 6:36 pm

Im wanting to know from the guys who pull apart engines and rebuild them. Do u guys get the engine balanced when building them? I got told ill need to take my crank, rods, pistons and crank pully to get them all balanced and so on before putting the engine together. I dont imagine this being very cheap and if i was to do this wouldnt i just give them the block aswell so they could put it all together right then and there. Or can you just get the rods and crank cleaned up and balanced on their own. So is everyone on here getting theirs balanced or what?

It is just for road use, 20v crank, ae92 rods, ae101 pistons. So i dnt need to get it all balanced just get them all cleaned up and it should be sweet? Can you get the rods and crank balanced on their own(seperatly)?

If you can afford it, do it for sure, just that little bit of extra insurance and there isn't going to be a better time than now while everythings out.

If the parts you are using are sourced from different engines (1 rod from one engine 3 from another etc) do it.

hey mate

They balnce rods on a balncing machine so they wouldn't need your block. Suppose you could possibly give them your bottom end to be assembled but if you can do it yourself and have the tools it'd be alot cheaper i'd imagine.

You can just get the rods and crank all balanced but they'd do them all at the same time but you might as well balance everything if you were thinking of doing some and it would improve perfromance on your motor as it will have a smoother rev to it. It just be like not getting your wheels balanced so when you go fast your car will shake. I think it will also cause more wear and tear to your engine. However it is not essential to balance your motor.

From what some of my mates tell me they said they've paid somewhere round $200-$250ish to do and you can also take your clutch and pressure plate to be balanced from memory

Rods are all from the same engine but then the crank will be from another, yeah i think i might get it all balanced together...............like you say there isnt a better time to do it and ill feel better knowing that its balanced. Ill be putting the bottom end and all the rest together myself carefully as i want the experience. Thanks guys

I'm doing the same thing.. although my main motivation is shiney tools... just need a couple of torque wrenches and a valve spring compressor and a bigger hammer and some pure chrome screwdrivers and something that says "snap on" on it and a big shiney red toolbox... $&#$% the list goes on.

That would have had to include all bearings and some other machining work?

Where did you got for that and what exactly did they do? That just seems pricey.

The problem is the flywheel and p/plate i will be using on the engine is currently being used with my daily driver. I was planning to swap it over once i pull the engine out.

Why ripped?
Sounds like he got an thorough job done.
I would think a proper balance job would take some time to do. $200 would be like only 2 hours work.

Nah, $600 is pretty steep. Most places around here charge ~$200. I guess it will vary from place to place though. New balancing machines are expen$ive ;)

$200 should cover most of it. You'll find the 20V cranks are pretty damn good from factory. Last lot I got done was a bit under $200 I think which got crank balanced, rods and pistons within half a gram of each other, flywheels and clutch balanced up too.

exactly, anything over $300 is either balanced to NASA spec, or ripped

im looking at getting my rotating assembly balanced soon.
with flexplate its going to cost me roughly $150.

its one of those things, you have done all that work, might as well do it.
especially if you are going to be revving it out.
