Bad bits of SW20

Postby Redd » Thu Apr 26, 2007 7:59 pm

I have bought this Sw body off flying brick but I don't really know where to look for stuctural problems and rust etc in an Sw could someone on here help a Genga out? Its gonna take alot of work and $$$ to get this to be what I want and I wanna know if its gunna be a waste of time. I would ask this question on the MR2 forums but they never get back to me when I aply to join them so f*#k em.

Man I hate it when I start second guessing myself.

Okay well if you've got your other car that you're swapping all of the bits onto his, you'll be sweet.

IT would be finding the bits and pieces that will kill you.

SW20s are generally sweet in terms of rust etc, I wouldnt be too worried TBH.

Just check the chassis rails for clamp marks indicating its had a big whack at some point. As Roman said, they're pretty good rustwise.
1988 KE70 Wagon - Slowly rusting
1990 NA6 MX-5 - because reasons
2018 Ranger - Because workcar
1997 FD3S RX-7 Type R - all brap, all the time

Look for cracking on the chassis around the front sway bar mounts. Mines doing this apparently (mechanic spotted it last time it was in) and i'm not sure where to take it to get it fixed. Anyone have any ideas?

As above tho, they don't rust.

Yep. Had this happen before. My mechanic cut them out and welded in a 1/4 inch thick steel plate in its place.

This is what it looked like. They had tried welding the crack first, but with no joy. Gave it a few taps and the crack reopened

Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.

Adam, thanks for the pic. I'll probly take it to a panelbeater, out of interest where'd you get yours done? Someone who's done the exact same job before would seem a good bet...

$5 says if you ring round and get some one who was in the trade 10 years ago and they will know what you mean
