Can someone tell me what they mean when they say about a speaker its peak power is 1000w and its rated power is 300w?

Ignore peak power, its total BS. RMS power is the only power rating to look for.

oh ok then.. so if its 300w rated power then i should look at running 300w through the speaker??

If its 300WRMS rated then yes, it must be a fairly decent speaker or a sub for that kinda rating. You realise that has bugger all to do with loudness yes?

um yer it is a sub. just says 300w continuios rated power :? My g/f brought it for me as a gift, and trying to work out a suitable amp to run it. any ideas?

awsome, was thinking about getting a sony one since the sub is sony so ill look out for something with similar specs.

DJ some of the older Sony amps are pure class A and put out a sweet sweet sound, so don't tar them all with the same brush. The Sony amps of new are fairly average yes but fine for most people.

Sony amps (especially the older ones) are crap in some peoples opinions. Their opinions on the older ones however, are crap.

Cant just say "Old Sony is junk" because there is a very broad range of Sony gear ranging from pretty average to pretty damn awesome.
