4age running worse after service!!!

Postby rwd_mayhem » Sun May 13, 2007 6:41 pm

i gave my car a treat today, new spark plugs, an engine flush and new oil/filter because it was running quite bad before, missing and really smokey. as soon as i had finished the service i took off and its actually worse! now it has a big miss, no power, backfires while driving and is still quite smokey especially in higher revs. i was thinking maybe leads, or something to do with TPS im sure thats not set where it should be.

timing was set by auto sparky i dont believe that is the problem. spark plugs these days are all pre-set so not that.

While they may be pre set, they might be set wrong.

Before you threw them out....

Did you study the condition of the old plugs ??

Even without a plug chop (more of a tuning technique) you can tell
quite a lot about what is going on inside your engine by taking a close
look at your old plugs. The insulators should be a uniform brown(ish)
colour for normal running, lighter if you do a lot of motorway driving, or
darker if mostly short trips.

Wet, black, carbon caked or oily plugs are bad :(

Broken or cracked insulators are bad :(

Severe erosion and/or melting of the electrodes is bad :(

Even plugs that are well past their recommended changeout distance
will continue to work just fine for normal running, if the mechanical and
electrical condition of the engine is up to scratch.

hmmm they should be, but i will double check that, why didnt i think of that. yea just plugs and oil/filter. also did a STP engine flush.

1, 3 and 4 were all black/carboned up but it was running way too rich a while ago which i fixed by turning that screw on the throttle body. and 2 was all oiled up

Would you like a screwdriver ??

Postby jondee86 » Sun May 13, 2007 10:00 pm

The screw under the rubber plug (if the plug is still there) is the idle
speed adjustment, and does nothing other than control the amount of
air "leaking" past the throttle plate. It is not a mixture control. Mixture
(injector timing) is controlled by the ECU on a 4AGE.

Your engine is most likely still running rich if it blows black smoke
under WOT conditions. You may also have a problem with rings not
sealing properly. Using an engine flush may have actually let more oil
into the combustion chamber, by cleaning some of the crud out of the
ring grooves.

Get a compression test, and check that your thermostat is not stuck
wide open (engine running cold).

could it be ECU memory not being reset?

its not black smoke its grey, it was blowing black smoke then i did that screw and it changed to grey smoke. yea might have to get new leads just to see what happens. rings may be gone especially on 2. viscote can fix that lol.

ive done it before too, runs like a complete sack of sh!t when they're round the wrong way eh!!

did it smoke beforehand? are you running an o2 sensor? IIRC black smoke is overfuelling, blue is burning oil / rings. sometimes it can be a bit hard to sell whether the smoke is blue or black though

yea huge sack of shit allright! it was smoking before, was black until i turned that screw on t/b and changed to white smoke. yes i have an oxygen sensor and my temp sensors are pluged in, gonna need to get someone to follow me and tell me what colour the smoke is.
