Wheel studs

Postby FEINT » Tue May 15, 2007 12:31 pm

Car is ST202 Celica 1996 with 3SGE.

I have stripped wheel stud and it needs to be replaced.

I have called Toyota and they want me to provide them with a sample. I can't really take it out as I need the car.

Is there a specific model / number or another car that shares the same wheel stud that I can tell Toyota?

Anybody here got a write up of how to take off the wheel studs?

ive never taken one out but surely they come out the same way as every other stud? just put 2 nuts on the thread and tighten them against each other, then undo the back nut and the stud should unscrew?

Nope, they are pressed in, you need a good smack on it and it will come out (you will need to take the brake rotor off to do that).

I am in Auckland.

It is a real bitch trying to explain what it looks like to Toyota parts dept when they should know what it is!

I am going to try to take it off tonight, hopefully I can.

1) Remove wheel
2) remove caliper + bracket
3) remove rotor, that should just be with 1 or 2 screws right?
4) bang out old studs?

I was hoping to save all this hassle and get a mechanic to do it with a replacement ready. But it seems like everyone wants to see the original before giving me a replacement.

Thanks for the help guys! Keep the suggestions coming!

Then I would suggest that you stop dealing with parts monkeys and email Mr Revhead with your model and chassis codes, and get him to send you the right part http://forums.toyspeed.org.nz/viewtopic.php?t=44317;)

that is about right, the rotor is not held by anything, just make sure you place the hub in right position before you bang out the studs - it has got a cut out on the backing plate for puling out studs. You will see - it is straight forward.
pressing them it is a bit harder - clean hub before you do anything - aslo do not use wheel nut to "press" the stud, but if you have to put wheel nut upside down (conical bit facing you) and make sure there are couple of washers and plenty of lube when you do.

So the removing of everything sounds pretty straight forward, it is just getting the studs back in that ihave to have it 'pressed'? That means putting the stud through the hub and putting a nut (conical part Facing me)on the end and tightening it?

I will send Mr Revhead an email if the part monkeys can't match it up! Thanks alot for the help!

Knowing that a 90942-02052 is a 5mm longer replacement for this stud ;)

Yep looks like it's a 90942-02049, same thread count anyway.

BTW the reason I know these numbers off by heart is I had to find longer studs for my SW20, went through all the different one's in Greenlane Toyota's shelves to find them.

front p/n 90942-02070
rear p/n 90942-02070 36mm
or 90942-02047 43mm

not 100% sure why the differing lengths, prob the longer one is for alloy wheels.

chances are that one fivebob posted will work too... 99.9% of toyota studs are the same thread pattern, its just the splines that are different
