Trademe Electrical Ground Kits

Postby gmacrae » Thu May 17, 2007 4:38 pm

I know these ground kits cant really do much for an engine in terms of performance, the reasoning is simple but find it hard to believe most factory neg/earth setups are able to be improved on like these kits claim.

Have any of you tried any of these types of kits? What improvements did you notice, if any? Discuss?

Cheers

Bullshit. Unless you moved battery, or your wiring is rotten or you are missing some of factory grounding wires.
It almost same as fuel magnets, air "tornado" thingies, fuel star canister thing, exhaust whistles and spinners...

Tis theoretically possible to get better charging and lower current draw...... Meaning your alternator doesn't have to work as hard, your battery voltage could be higher and if you have a loud stereo then lights won't dim out (or to the same extent).

As GMacrae said - it won't help engine performance, but it would help in other ways.

My point on it is that the manufacturer of the car probably knew what they were doing when they designed the electrical system of a car, so your stock electrical system on a stock or relivitely stock vehicle should be adequite to provide the best 'performance'. I highly doubt it will give you those massive increases in performance they list. I guess for cars with high end audio it might be a good idea but it also might be a good idea to talk to the person selling you the high end sound gear cause they will probably know how to wire it properly.

most factory wiring is getting pretty old (in my case anyways) and if you check out the factory earths, they are pretty thin, and corroded or wires coming apart.

You can get alot of problems with poor earthing, and for the price of those kits why wouldnt you install one?

I ran one in the supra before and didnt have it hooked up like they have in the pics, rather just earthing important parts, like battery to chassis, chassis to block, chassis to afm, chassis to coils, etc.

Well I've got an 84 MR2 and the wiring is fine. I guess that's up to the condition of the car.

I SO don't think that $150 or what ever those things go for is worth it. If you're worried about your earthing I"m sure $20 from an electrical supplies shop would do the same job.

Just strikes me as another way of scamming boy racers out of their hard earned. Anybody got dyno plots for one of these devices?

i was talking about the $35 kits you buy. he wasnt talking about a voltage stabilizer kit, unless im mistaken.

just go buy some 4-8guage wires an make some grounds

A couple engine to chssis (pendint on ur factory ones) and batt to chassis can be worth while but not a $150 kit that just puts rice amounts of wire in the enginebay

quite often its cheaper and easier just to buy the kits.. you get about 6 wires or so. (the $35 kits incase you are going to bust out the big letters again)

but thats not TOKYO DRIFT STYLES YO!

I agree with deaf.. but i'm a lazy fecker, and i'd rather go buy a complete kit for $150 than piss round making up wires.

Ah, in that case I can agree with you. A $35 kit that has all the wires made up is not a bad idea if you decide you need more earth cause it saves all the hassle of putting them together.

But the voltage stabilizer kits, are definately a waste of money IMO.

learn electronics properly and you will understand what a good ground is and ground potention difference etc. in cases of cars....

in points of time while running the ground will be better off the alternator casing. not the batts but battery is just important...
while cranking your best ground is off the battery... you also have to keep in mind clean grounding for sesnors suplied by the ECU etc i can go on and on and on ground kits wont help much lol the chassis is a pretty $&#$% good bit of wire.. just as long as it has a healty lead to the motor

thats the kinda discussion i was talking about lol.

So the russian dude isnt prepared to admit they're worth sh!t, everyone else seems to be of the same opinion as me. If i can find a kit cheap enough, might just grab it - Cheers lads :)

As I said, they are good when you have a problem.
no point buying them if you have no problem.
Problems are: slow crancking, dim lights, pulsating lights due to load, rough idle.

Don't scoff too hard. Some time ago I saw a car mag do a back to back with a ground wiring kit, and on that particular car they picked up about 5hp (about 7% on that car I think).
