ive been running an ae85 diff in my ke35 with a standard bluetop 4age and never had a problem. i don't exactly drop the clutch or do lots of skids though...partly due to only having a non-lsd diff head. they are reasonably cheap, you can pick up diff heads for them for about $50.

thats only ina stock bluetop though, a 4agze will have considerably more power so you'd probably want something stronger...an ae86 diff is stronger, but pretty damn expensive if you break it.

you don't need to shorten an ae86 diff if you run fwd offset mags, same with the older hilux diffs.

ae86 and ae85 diffs are same width, you will need to re do the mounts though - they don't bolt straight in. if you don't shorten them you will need fwd offset mags.

i don't see why so many people want to put an ae86 diff into their 4agte or 4agze cars though. they will blow up eventually from behind a stock 4age, so won't stand a chance behind a 4agte or 4agze. a hilux diff will never blow up and:

the older hilux diiffs don't need shortening ifyou run fwd offset mags, same with ae86 diffs.
you need to change the mounts on both the ae86 or hilux diff, so no advantage there in choosing an ae86 diff.
and you can pick up a hilux diff for around $300, then an LSD head on top of that for around $500.
for a stock, non lsd ae86 diff you'll be looking at around $800, then another $400+ for an LSD ... which you'll probably blow up after a little while.

so for alot cheaper you can get a diff which is a 10x stronger and will give you alot less hassles in the future. as you have said though its because of the size of them, but i would seriously consider going for a hilux diff anyway if I were you.

If you go for the t series diff get a drum brake one from a TE71 celica/supra or a corona. You still have to change the mounts and shorten it by 25mm on both sides. Dont forget to move the spring mounts. They may look close enough but once you get it on the car they make the springs sit UBER wonky.
Discs on the back are really for show on a car so small.
The drums brakes are huge and more than enough braking for a little starlet.
I use one on my racing car(1.8 turbo) and I have had no probs with the rear brakes. I cant say anything about the long term strength of the non-lsd one cause I got a trd lsd for it after a year. Never broke any diff heads, but I dont do many burn outs, tires are too expensive. I like going really fast around corners.

what ratio are you looking for ideally?

I have an RN41 hilux diff at work, but I also have some narrower diffs that i'm thinking would be suitable, but only come in 4.6, 4.9 and 5.1 ratio's

another option is some of the auzzy/USA made GA61`s came with a F series rear diff witch is almost a perfect fit for width being F series there reasnably strong & a bit smaller than a hilux G series

so the ratios how they say 4.3 and 4.5 is it the higher the ratio the more top end speed and the lower the ratio the more low end torque?

other way round like i run a 3.7:1 for my supra meaning i have a higher top speed but less torque but you can make up with for that with CC`s

a 4.5:1 will give you more torque than a 4:1 but the motor will rev more at say 100k than a 4:1
