Paint Problems

Checked out this AE101 today, all was well apart from the bootlid. Appeared as if the clearcoat was fading off in very noticeable patches. Does this generally suggest the paint is eventually going to start fading in other areas on the car? Also would a complete respray of the bootlid be the only solution right? The guy reckon it sould come right with a bit of polishing I assume this is caused by the UV light? Have noticed a fair few AE101s have this problem.

Yeah same here Ive got it on the roof, boot.
Getting a whole respray soon so doesn't concern me so much.

Probably not worth while buying it then? The tip of the ice berg possibly? Anyone know the exact causes of this, how it happens to some cars and not others?

Wasn't it a particular batch of them that went through with bad paint? or more precisely bad prep for paint? or am i getting confused with some other toyotas?

Mine hasn't seemed to strike this problem yet. Fingers crossed.

common fault on early 90's toyotas, seen it alot on camry's, corolla's, corona's etc, and my sprinter. Mainly on the darker blue/green/grey type colours

from what I have seen it happens more to metallic paints, they seem to be prone to oxidation if left outside all the time.

happens on black coloured cars.. my ae92 gtz is shocking. I noticed that on my mates ae101 gtz is fading on the spoiler.. no where else as of yet. Both cars i mentioned haven't been garaged for years

It will have to do with the paint they use. My black ST185 is mint, while my mates ST185 is shite (his prefacelift has a different paint code). My grey ST185 also had no problems, it wasnt metallic tho.

So what ya reckon, will the paint problems be on-going and spread from the bootlid to the rest of the car? Not keen on buying it if I'm going to have to respray the whole car in the near future. BTW my cars are always garaged at night so I guess that would help.

Oh yeah the colour is a silver/green

I would think as long as you keep it waxed on a regular basis you wont have to many problems.
Is the clear coat on the boot cracking? and flaking off. Or is it just faded and dull?
If the paint is not cracked then a good cut and polish might fix it. I cut and buffed up the paint on my ae92 today, it was very dull and faded, after cutting it back it shines once more! very happy with it.

As far as I know it happens to ALL grey metallics toyotas with enough exposure to sun light. It actually burns off clear coat. It happened to my AE101 which pushed me to a colour change .

a lot of import cars that come into nz are repainted before they go to the car yards, there are a lot of cowboys that do this work and quite often they do a quick job which can leave you with problems later, does the paint have different coulurs all over the car or is it similar? yes by the sounds of what you have said you will be repainting the spoiler, once the clear delaminates from the base you can only fix it with a sander so check the rest of the car it is not uncommon for us to paint just a spoiler or roof, bonnet etc.

sounds like clearcoat failure and a polish would not help there. needs a repaint.

If the rest of the car looks fine then you will just need to paint the bootlid and give the car's paint a proper wax from now on every few months.

Mines not that bad, just looks like weird little bubbles of clearcoat.
