Starlet Engine Conversions?

Postby Urban-Cruiser » Tue May 22, 2007 2:42 pm

Mate has a damaged Starlet ep85. And was wondering what engine he could transplant (he wants boost or more power) Its one of the 4wd models.
But anyway.... Was wondering if it would be better just to turbocharge the 4efe?
Any suggestions?
I told him to sell it and get something decent.

I've herd of a 3S-GTE in a starlet, and a 4A-GE has been done a few times. Would be mint because of the 4WD aswell!!!

The easy swap would be a 4E-FTE which would bolt in , the 4AGE and probablly more so the 3S-GTE would require alot more engineering .
The Starlet 4WD setup almost certainly won't handle much power , but it would probably be a good laugh before it broke

"Understeer" is when you hit the fence with the front of the car.
"Oversteer" is when you hit the fence with the rear of the car.
"Horsepower" is how fast you hit the fence.
"Torque" is how far you take the fence with you.

My friend was thinking of dropping a 3sgte or a sr20det from a gtir  in to it. He's such a sad case sometimes.

if you can tell us what the gearbox code is, we can tell you what can fit without too much mucking around, if it has an E series gearbox in it, either an AGE/AGZE/AGTE could fit in only having to custom 2 mounts. You'll be hard pressed to fit a SGE/SGTE because the engine bay is too short front to back, the intake manifold will foul on the firewall

But this is a 4wd model. So a AGE/AGZE/AGTE engine wouldnt be any use. Would it?
Mounting a turbo to the engine seems to be the best option, IMO. Just wanted to find out if there was any other options.

why would a 4agte be no use in it? think back hmm 15 years, were the Mazda Familia BFMR 4wd 1600 DOHC turbo not a uber fast car for there time? 260-300 engine HP would be easily achievable and it'd be more than enough to make a starlet FLY.

depends what it is.
who'd think a gearbox from behind a 4afe would handle 400 HP?
a E55 from a 4wd corolla has the same strength internals and an ST185 GT4 just a different bell housing.

std AE85 gear box handles a 3S-GTE as thats what i had in my old FX-GT AE85 running gear out of a waggon & 3S out of a ST185 intake is the hardest thing & you will need a custom raditor that goes on the buper side of the & a thin but long inter cooler because with oil cooler rad & FMIC you soon run out of room there also you will probly have to rangi up the bonnot catch as you soon run out of room for that apart from that its a tight squze but you will probly get it in il try find some pics of how it all fits if you want
