TA63(RA63?) Celica... any good?

Postby sigma » Mon May 28, 2007 5:52 pm

Im looking at building a rally/club car, that might see some track time and wanted to see if anyone here can tell me if this gen of Celica is any good? its got a 18R-GEU engine and a W55 box in it. How goods the engine as far as power is concerned and are there any common problems with these cars?

rust would be the biggest thing to look out for, and also it will have the solid rear axle suspension, which may not be suitable for what you are wanting to do.

Rust in Carinas - from personal experience:
- bottom of front guards between wheel arc and door
- firewall seam, below wiper motor
- underneath of front of bonnet
- front chassis were the rails join the front crossmember
- passenger kick panel (to the left of your left foot when sitting in the passenger seat) take this panel off, pull the sound deadening rubber/fabric stuff out of the way, look and feel in the bottom and corners for rust and or dampness.
- doors around hinges
- roof, top of B pillar area
- open fuel flap, look for rust in corner
- open boot, take out rear plastic liner and look at the seam where floor of boot meets back/tail light/number plate area.

I'm trying to discourage you from building a racecar as it was a great experience for me but it could be cheaper and will be quicker to buy a car with a cage etc. than build one.

I used to think that the orange and green tictacs gave you special powers. The orange ones would make you stronger and the green ones would make you faster. So i used to eat some green ones and run around my lounge as fast as i could, then eat the orange ones and try to pick up the sofa. I wish it were true!

I've got some friends who are involved with motorsport and one of them is an automotive engineer so things like seam welding and caging shouldn't be too expensive.

Can anyone tell me how heavy these things are? I couldn't find much info on google. And also what problems would I run into running the solid rear axle on gravel tracks?

well the ma61 with full options is about 1280kgs

so it will be lighter than that, since you have smaller engine and less options.

i would say roughly 1100-1180kgs.

solid rear is all good. Starlets, corollas, escorts all use them to good effect.

not sure on weight, but i would guess them to be in the 1050-1150kg range, but could be stripped reasonably light.

18rg is a heavy but torquey engine, some producing 140-ish HP STD

If it's an AA63, then it will have IRS.

If it's an *A60, it's got solid rear.

I'd ditch the POS 18rg though.

i have driven this car it needs new shocks and the brakes looking at the rear lights are shot and needs a new boot lid

the engine bay has had some interesting paint work done (read boy racer)
the interior was ok the digital dash worked and had a crap paint job

I think scots towing in sydenham have it

they told me that they wanted 4 to 5k 8O for it

also it had a lot condensation under the oil cap from sitting?

and ran hot in the run around block

What was wrong with the boot lid? I noticed it was sitting high on one side and the spoiler was less than straight.

Yeah they were asking on the high side, gonna see how the auction goes.
