suitable turbo upgrade for 1ggte. (calling turbo experts)

Postby mjrstar » Mon May 21, 2007 10:18 am

I have a T3 with a super 60 comp wheel (1.9inch iducer)which is running out of puff at 190kw atw (13psi)more boost doesn't help, (have i maxed out this compressor wheel)
Is there a proven turbo upgrade out there? I've heard of good results on hybrid ct26's?? would the likes of a stock evo turbo get better results?
it's running an external gate so the boost control side of things should be fine. i have a to4e front cover i was thinking about fitting but i am unsure if there is an adaptor to go from the t3core to the t4 front cover. Also as the exhaust housing is only a .48 from a skyling so could this be my limiting factor?
I can't really see what else could be holding it back, it has a good sized intercooler, custom inlet/exhaust manifolds, bigger throttle body, link plus ecu with a good few hours on the dyno, decent fuel system etc..
looking for about 225-230kw atw. but don't want to spend megabucks
any constructive suggestions welcomed.

Evo 4 230Kw atw

79 bugeye 245kw atw.

~190kw @ wheels would be about right for a Super 60 T3 - they aren't that much of a big flowing turbo. A TD05 from an EVO would be probably your cheapest upgrade option IF you are handy with a welder etc. Do you have an external wastegate? TD05s are a bit inclined to boost creep.... but one of those would probably give you a good 30kw more potential with similar spool.

There are ways of going with the T04E front cover, but there is no point without the wheel to match. The cover and the compressor wheel have to match up - a Super60 T3 will not (excuse the phrase) reach the edges and it'd not be very useful.

that link is a good one, cheers.
as for the bigger front cover, i was planning on putting a 57 trim wheel in it which it had before. i realise the puny t3 wheel would be like a sausage up a hallway. have welder so willing to do a bit of mucking around on exhaust manifold flange, down pipe and compressor outlet. just don't want to get in wrong, as I have spent a few bucks building what is a glorified skyline turbo.

What wheel do you have on the back of the T3 - if its running your typical Skyline hotside (.48a/r with a T25-style turbine) then it'd be all bad with a 57trim T04E compressor. How much power are you actually after? 57-trim has 300rwkw potential if I remember rightly which would be pretty mad in a KP haha.

If its a proper T3 hot side, back cut the turbine and fit a 55mm TO4B wheel. Thats good value turbo but can be prone to a bit of surge. depens on ethen engine and how its built. To4E 50 or similar will also work.

the hot side has already been heavily machined to take the to4 turbine wheel (50mm i think, i know it came out of a .86 exhaust housing.
I'm pretty sure it'll be the cold side that's restricting it. the 190kw makes it a handful in the wet (an occasionally the dry) but it could do with a little more top end as it's kinda running out of puff.

0.86 come on T3's also. It must have a T3 shaft though. TO4 shaft with a T3 compressor makes no sence.

have decided on a t3/t4 with 57 trim compressor wheel. shouldn't notice the lag too much in such a light car....
