Hey

Whats the base pressure for a 4agze engine?

For some reason my cars got a slight miss and when reved black smoke comes out and it backfires.

It also has a very eratic idle, swings around about 500rpm when its warm and trying to idle around 1,000. It often stalls too.

I thought it was because its running real rich but am suspecting damaged leads? The leads i got do seem shit and im getting some wierd resistance values through them. One has massive resistance, even my multimeter set on mega ohms says its discontinious but the cylinder does fire :?.

Also i think it may be the plugs, they are very new (10 or so mins use) but during some of the time my base pressure was too high (have reduced it now) and the injectors were firing twice as much as they should have. So it was very very very rich. Maybe they fouled up already. Is there a way to clean them??

Cheers.
Simon.

35 psi for ze, The idling fault may be due to low coolant level and not related to the fuel prob you are having.

as far as the fuel problem goes, bump the pressure down to the above and try that, you can sandblast plugs clean, or just use light sandpaper between the electrode with a cleaner like brakcleen. If you still have a missfire just fit a new set of leads.

fouled plugs can give backfire symtoms as well as missfire.

If you get disconnected on a lead, THROW IT AWAY NOW.

The spark will jump a gap in the leads, but it will hurt it's power.

You already said they are dodgy, don't muck around and throw them away. New plugs, new leads, maybe a new cap and rotor for the price.

Then go again :)
